Automatic FTP Detection not working

Just performed a FTP test in TrainerRoad (the full 20min test not the Ramp) and recorded the entire 1 hour session on my Garmin 945

My FTP increased by 29w (Wahoo!! - But I havent done one for ages) but the watch is still showing the original FTP and it did not detect the new FTP

I verified that the setting on the watch is to automatically detect new FTP's.. but it didnt and now in performance metrics on Garmin it is showing old FTP

Garmin connect shows the correct figure for the  Max Avg Power (20 min) value, but the watch still think its 29w lower...

Any ideas? (without doing the FTP again!)

  • delete all your personal cycling records, set your FTP to Zero, then it start working again during new rides, had the same prob on my Edge 830 and a lot of other users too!

  • I can delete all the records but it does not seem possible to set FTP to zero as the minimum value is 1 on the watch (under power zones)

  • Just a crazy thought here.  Set it to 1 then try it again???

  • umm, why not just set your FTP in GC to (294 x 0.95 = 279W) manually

  • that sets the power-zones on the watch, but it does not update the performance metrics - So the performance metrics shows the old data and shows the incorrect W/Kg

  • as i wrote, this is the only option you have:

delete all your personal cycling records, set your FTP to Zero, then it start working again during new rides, had the same prob on my Edge 830 and a lot of other users too!

it's a bug and i have an open ticket for Edge 830, but didn't know when it will be fixed!

  • Hi all!
    Any news about this issue?
    It happened with me yesterday.

20min high power effort, but the new FTP weren't detected by my 945.
The trainning peaks sent me a notification about the new FTP value.
And the 20min max power on the ride have the correct value.

    TIA
    Guilherme

  • hi everyone, I have the same problem here ! (FR945)

  • Automatic FTP Detection does not mean it automatically detects your FTP during a 20min max effort ride (this is what it means in TrainingPeaks). Automatic FTP Detection on your Garmin means it tries to estimate your FTP based on your heart rate, power and VO2 max. during all your rides. This works te same for your automatic lactate threshold during runs.

    Garmin: https://www8.garmin.com/manuals/webhelp/forerunner945/EN-US/GUID-B40A5128-C382-4F10-AD38-39649C42EF35.html

''Before you can get your functional threshold power (FTP) estimate, you must pair a chest heart rate monitor and power meter with your device (Pairing Your Wireless Sensors), and you must get your VO2 max. estimate (Getting Your VO2 Max. Estimate for Cycling).

The device uses your user profile information from the initial setup and your VO2 max. estimate to estimate your FTP. The device will automatically detect your FTP during rides at a steady, high intensity with heart rate and power.''

However, you can always conduct an FTP test on your Garmin device by selecting the ''FTP Guided Test''.

  • Yeah, the watch is really trying to estimate LTHR by detecting the inflection point in Heart Rate Variability commonly associated with threshold (similar to running) and trying to associate a power number with this. It is NOT using 95% of your best 20 minute power.

Personally, I find the FTP autodetect comes up with an FTP estimate considerably lower than what I can achieve with the 20 minute method.
