Open water swim reading high on the 945.

Went for a sea swim this morning with both my 920 and my 945 to see what the difference was between the 2 as I was sure the last sea swim I did the 945 read a far greater distance. So after a loop the 920 read 1018m and the 945 read 1446m. Any remedies to correct this? The 920 is reading correct as we have measured the swim.

  • Would you post a link to the activities?

I can post any number of swims like these throughout this summer that my wife has recorded on her 945 - https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4598205743

The course is a measured 2000m out and back along a buoy line from the shore. Distance recorded does vary +/- 200m but bearing in mind tides and drift then it's definitely acceptable. What GPS and software version is your 945 on?

  • I found a similar thing recently. I swam w a friend and both of us have a 945. Two swims in a row I have recorded about 50% higher distance. The only thing I can think is that I had my phone in my swim bouy, so maybe it was somehow recording part of the swim on both? Will try the next swim without the phone.

  • It also depends on which technique you swim. Freestyle is most accurate, whereas breastswimming is extremely inaccurate, since the watch doesn't get enough time out of the water for a proper signal. That's my explanation anyways..

You might have the same problem than me. In OW, distance/pace is measured two different ways, from accelerometers and from the GPS/GLONASS/GALILEO. In case GPS signal is lost, the watch keeps counting the distance from the arm movements, and when GPS is found again, it adds the lost GPS distance as well. - stupid solution, and it can not be set to rely only on orbit signal.

What GPS settings do you have? I used GPS+GLONASS, next time I will check with GPS only. GPS+GLONASS definitely does not work for me.
