Have just updated to GPS 2.90.
After using garmin express, it was easy, not via the mobile app
Can't get it via Garmin Express. Its a no show. Currrently at 2.80 and today my run was a mess.
on my first run, the GPS fix was as fast as i started my running App, in this case the new Stryd (Beta) app!
will see, what happens on the next runs
@others: you tried to look on the watch himself under setting software updates, sometimes there you can find the installer?
No improvement for me on GPS fix at start of activity - still 45-120 seconds. Previous Fenix 5,5x + 6 have all picked up much faster
Why do you think something will change after the update. Try to look somewhere else for the issue. Could be high buildings, glass cover, skin on the watch case, clothing over the watch, some strong magnetic fields, low cover on the type of satellites you are using, 3D location enabled... Also GPS trackers (altho USA and EU say otherwise) for non military uses are with maximum of 10 meters accuracy - now if you put that on a small anthena and it's not illogical that you can get some differences even on best of GPS trackers. You also should consider the type of map you are using and if it autosticks to certain features (like car GPSs do to roads). There is also this that other GPS trackers (strava, polar...) do GPS filtering (unfortunately only gps, I can't even count the times where I have 130 bpm and then suddenly spike of 240 (wtf) recorded and counted as accurate), but it seems that garmin does not (that and the fact that strava uses their own algorithm is why you usually get difference between the two). I actually consider this good because I can get the raw gps data and filter it as I want (not that I've ever done that :D).
Usually those updates(for any device) tweak the gps settings a little and clear bugs in the basic error cleaning algorithms but it rarely ends up in noticable end user changes. The factors that play with the signal are just too many and too unpredictable(altho AI in recent months do amazing stuff with it).
Change from GPS 2.80 to 2.90 listed above. I don’t find any difference that’s all
What's odd for me is the very first run I did with 2.9, it picked up the satellites immediately. Just a few seconds. I thought, sweet, they finally fixed this!
Next run? At least a full minute. The mind boggles. I haven't seen sat acquisition this slow since my ancient Forerunner 305. I've had a 235, 645, 935, Fenix 5+, all of which had no problems picking up satellites immediately. How on earth could they break something that had been mastered for years? What's a bonus is my wife's 945, which has never had an issue with sat acquisition, *started* seeing this issue with 2.9.
Neither do i. Mine's just as quick as it's always been.
My FR945 locks satellites in more than 1 minute... my FR920 in just 5 seconds in the same place. What is more, FR920 locks satellites inside my apartment (13th floor of 15, away from windows!). FR945 is unable to do that. I think we can blame the Sony chip for that.
