Is there a way to backup (and restore) a watch configuration?

I'm sure everyone's experienced an annoying bug on their Garmin which requires factory-resetting the device. I've had a few of these over the years, and although the process of doing a factory reset is easy, re-customising the watch afterwards takes forever.

By "re-customising" I'm talking about the customise I make to almost every data screen, for almost every sport. In addition, we have customised alerts, custom sport activities, modified GPS settings, routing options, assistance features, the main watchface, button configurations, and even the order of widgets. All of this personalisation takes a lot of time so when, eventually, I have to do a factory reset, trying to reconfigure the device back to my personalisations is a total pain.

Is there a way of "backing up" watch preferences and configurations (for example, via Garmin Connect), so that if I factory reset, I can simply load in my configuration and the watch restores all my preferences?

(and if not, why not, Garmin?)
