Turn off phone alerts on Forerunner 945

Is there a way to stop my Forerunner 945 from getting phone alerts and messages? I find them a menace as they occlude date screens, confuse workout alerts and require action to clear. Also I have my phone so I can look at that if I need to.

Settings> Phone> Smart Notifications = Off.

Not clear. Not a menu selection from any device

To stop them during activities only:

Settings> Phone> Smart Notifications>During Activity>Notifications>off

Since I don't find the instructions very clear either, I hope I interpret your comments that the instructions were unclear. For me, it would be

On the phone, GCM (Android) -> Settings -> Notifications -> App Notifications

Turn off those applications that you don't want on your Garmin devices.

Just figured it out. Go to Settings on Garmin watch —>connectivity—->Phone—->notifications ; then select during activity or not and you can turn off or allow only calls or texts or both.
