Virtual Run, Zwift, and PC

I've been using virtual run on my phone with no issues the last few days, but the screen is a bit small to really see what's going on. I'm at the gym, so there isn't an option to cast to a TV. I thought about bringing my windows 10 tablet, and it seems to work great... For a couple minutes. All the stats drop and I assume I lose the connection. Is it because my phone is nearby and the watch prefers it, or is the Bluetooth casting not holding to the tablet? Seems to drop consistently after a couple minutes. No issues with Android.

  • This sounds like Windows drops the Bluetooth Connection.

Did you check the energy saving options if there is something about battery mode? Did you crosscheck with the tablet plugged into power (at home)?

I didn't have issues at home when I set it up but to your point, I think it was plugged in. I'll try again tonight with any battery saver off and make sure Bluetooth isn't allowed to be turned off by windows in device manager.

The expectation is that a 945 SHOULD be able to send over Bluetooth to a PC after the latest software update, correct?

  • Yes, the virtual run app should work the same whether you are running Zwift on your phone or your PC. I have personally used this on both a Pixel 3 as well as a Windows 10 PC.

If you are still seeing issues, we would need to know the model of tablet you are using as there may be some hardware difference there that is causing this.

  • Perhaps also try turning off the BT on your phone?

So after some trial and error, the following all combined seems to be working. I'm running this on a Surface Pro 6, for the record.

    Solution:

Turns out the issue was my HRM-Tri.

Looks like when it connects to my 945, it messes up something and I start seeing the 945 behave strangely. Soon as I took it off and did a run without it, no issues. Confirmed 2 runs, 1 hour each. Odd that it has issues with an ANT+ hrm. My laptop does not connect to ANT+ and I don't think the Tri is Bluetooth, is it?

    One time setup
    1. Turn the Bluetooth off on any phone the 945 is paired with
    2. Add the 945 to Bluetooth in Windows 10
    3. Be sure no battery saver mode is on*
    4. Keep in mind by default it may come on automatically if the device gets to 20% or so battery.*
    5. Optional: open up services (search services in programs), and find your Bluetooth adapter. Set the startup type to automatic. And make sure it's actually running.

*If your device is plugged in, not really an issue.

    To Zwift
    1. Stretch before your run
    2. Bluetooth off on your phone
    3. Make sure Bluetooth is on on your tablet
    4. Don't be wearing a heart rate monitor, I guess?

    5. Start up Zwift
    6. Get into the virtual run activity on the 945
    7. Go through all the normal setup you do in Zwift
    8. Run
  • ha. It sounds like the run is less exhausting than the setup process. Smiley

  • Setup is easy as long as you remember that there is only one bluetooth connection possible. In my eyes, its well done how you set the whole thing up.
