Garmin 945 - iOS messages while working out

How do i read messages from my phone while in a workout? I currently get notifications but can't access the message, its very frustrating.

Glance at the first line or two that is displayed to see if it's of any interest.
Press top right when the message comes in and scroll through as much as you can see.
Pick up your phone to see all the message.
Ignore the message and enjoy your workout.

The top right button doesnt work during workouts thats the issue. Works when not working out but not during a workout

I think on mine it's the down arrow (bottom left) that allows viewing of a message while in-workout.
