Weird watch glitch - steps resetting

OK, this just happened.

I had a workout from the Garmin Coach scheduled.  A thirty minute easy run.  I had set up a course to run, knocking off a few local roads that I'd never run before.  I've done this before and had no problems that weren't operator error.

This morning's run was different.  I did the workout, and got a reported distance of 2.93 miles which seems accurate.  However, the GPS track only followed the first 1.1 miles (as per Google Maps), skipping the rest of my run.  So the activity on my watch and Connect have a map and a distance that don't match.

I then noticed that the step count for the day was about 2,500 steps.  I'm not sure how long my stride would be to walk that far and only get 2,554 steps.  And now my step count on my watch resets to 2,554 steps when I sync with my phone, even though the number of steps increments on my watch while I'm walking.

On my Garmin Connect, the number of steps in Garmin Connect is incrementing, and then falling back.  It's currently at 2,751.  Ten minutes ago it was at 3,451.

Suggestions?  Is this something I can fix, or do I need to call Garmin and get a replacement?

Update:

Just walked around the block as a tracked walk.  My step count increased to 4,046 for the walk.  Then I connected to Garmin Connect.  The walk successfully shows up at a mapped activity, but my step count dropped to 3,423.  Still hoping someone has a brilliant idea other than calling Garmin Support and getting a replacement.  That would be my third 945.  Number one was not a USA version, so I had to return it for one with actual maps of the US.  Number two is the one I have now.

Final Update:

Since no one had any brilliant ideas, I tried the following.  I deleted my watch from my Connect app on my phone.  I uninstalled my Connect app on my phone.  I rebooted my phone.  I installed Connect on my phone.  I repaired my watch and my Connect app.

It's been a couple days, and I'm no longer having my steps reset.  I'm crossing my fingers and hopefully this has solved the problem.
