MoveIQ walks identified as elliptical

Since January 23, 2020, my lunch-time walks are identified as Elliptical by MoveIQ.  This has happened 100% of the time since that date.  Before, the walks were always identified as Walking.

Anyone else seen this?  I don't think my gait has changed, I didn't get new shoes or a watch band and I walk the same route.  It is of no consequence to me, other than a curiosity.

  • That's nothing, mine thinks I'm open water swimming!

In truth, it's never 100% accurate. It gets it right sometimes, but sometimes isn't every time. It misses movement time to record and gets what it does record wrong. It never felt like it was ready to be released. It's like a beta test that somehow made it's way into production.

  • Yep. this is a great description, the "beta feature that somehow got into production branch".

This is probably the #1 thing I miss, from my FB, is that it could figure out almost any "auto activity".  If I started riding, and rode 20, 30, 50 miles, or whatever, it got that ENTIRE ride, almost dead-on (w/o GPS, so there's that).
Same with walks, swims, etc, it just "figure out the motion", and started tracking, I almost NEVER manually started an activity, which was pretty darn nice.

I like my 945, and it's obviously more geared to my activities (I'm an ex-racing cyclist and still ride with race-pace groups frequently), but I almost wish they'd just remove the MoveIQ feature, given that you can't do ANYTHING with those moves anyway.

On the FB, if it got one wrong (maybe 1/100 times), you could simply change the activity, and zip-boom, everything was right again.  Garmin doesn't seem to want to enable this, on the watch, or the s/w view interface.  You can use various 3rd-party tools, to do this, but it's a huge pain, IMO.

  • How does anyone get MoveIQ to do *anything* ? I have mine enabled and have had for years (VivoActive HR before the 945) and it has never ever noticed any walk or similar as a regular activity!

  • It doesn't record an activity, but an entry shows in your calendar.

  • Yes, mine does that a lot too, and always has, I just ignore it...

  • There is the option to turn it off.

  • Yes, mine does that too .. I find it annoying. Also annoying is that I can't edit the entry to have it marked as walk - the only option offered is to delete it. It would be nice if they allowed us to fix the incorrect classification.

  • I only noticed this recently, as only have my 945 ~two months. It seems to think I'm continually doing elliptical activities when in reality I'm just walking around. Not that it matters that much to me but going by what I read here, it's a known bug. Has anyone contacted Garmin support about it?

For the record I have never used the watch on one of those machines!

  • I contacted Garmin Support today via chat & they've opened a case for me. The person I was dealing with said they had another similar report as well.

  • Garmin support have come back & said essentially that it doesn't' work for everyone, they can't fix it & best bet is to disable it which I'd already done. Why promote it as a feature then.

What was funny was they said excessive arm movement might be confusing it which sound plausible except that it's Winter so I tend to walk around outdoors with  my hands in my jackets pockets so hardly any arm movement.
