max heart rate and lactate threshold autodetect issues

My forerunner 945 keeps automatically switching my set max heart rate from 197 to 185.  The 197 is a manual entry based on a historical race.  The 185 is based on a recently measured max heart rate during training.  I have set it to not auto detect my max heart rate but it continues to switch to the lower 185 value even after i have switched it twice.  I believe this is having a significant impact on my VO2 max as measured by the watch.

I have lactate threshold set to autodetect, but when i page to the screen that shows my lactate threshold, it continues to show it as manually entered.

These issues first started sometime in December or January-wondering if they are related to a firmware update?  If anyone else is experiencing similar issues, I'd be interested to hear.

I have similar problem, with heart rate zones. I set zones to be based on lactate threshold, but after one day, zones are automatically set to be based on max heart rate, so I have to switch to  lactate before every run,  it's happen from 3.9 software version....

  • Set your HR zones and max in Garmin Connect (preferrably the web version) rather than setting them on the watch. The GC zones tend to overwrite the watch.

  • Why should you enter a much higer max hf rate rather than the autodetect ? this will indeed influens you VO2 max. but is is unrealistic.

also you recovery time is not good from out of the garmin watch.

  • known high heart rate is from a race last june, before I had watch.  also, given that max heart rate efforts are fairly uncommon for me (and most runners?) it seems it would be better to input it manually.

  • my issues seem to have started in december which would be from software version 4.0?

  • have you checked the zone settings on GC Interweb as suggested?

  • Yes-the max heart rate listed there is the correct manually entered value.

  • 1. Turn Bluetooth on your watch to off.

    2. On GC (web version), change your zone setting method to % of maxHR.

    3. Set your desired maxHR, and zone pecentages.

    4. Check on the GC app on your phone that this value has transferred over to GCM.

    5. Turn BT on and perform a sync. Check that the correct value has transferred over from GC.

Values in GC overwrite those on the watch, so you want to ensure that all 3 sources (GC web, GCM and watch) are all saying the same thing.

If you want to use LTHR as your zone setting method, then repeat the above process (modifying steps 2 & 3 as appropriate). Note that LTHR often gets screwed up after a firmware update, so you may have to repeat the above process. As long as the value of LTHR is correct, who cares if it was manually entered or not?
