Virtual Run and Zwift?

Does anyone know exactly how the new Virtual Run feature in 4.06 beta and Zwift work together? Does the watch broadcast directly to the Zwift app? And ore specifically, does this mean one can bypass third party treadmill hardware such as Runn?

  • It will broadcast like RUNN would do, you start the Virtual Run App on the watch and than you can add the FR945 as an sensor.
Would be interesting not to bypass RUNN (mine is still on its way) but to record Data directly on the watch for TE and forward the data to Zwift.

It will broadcast as a treadmill and a cadence sensor and if you enable broadcasting of HR in activities, it will also broadcast as HR Monitor (you will have to couple HR separate, the other twos are combined)

  • I was able to directly connect my 945 to Zwift running on my iPhone and it came up as a Speed, Cadance and HR Sensor.

  • I'm wondering how it works with a separate footpod like Stryd.

Does the Stryd connect to the 945 and then the 945 transmits the pace/distance to Zwift?  What about HR?  Would that work similarly?

Or does Stryd, like an external HRM, have to connect to Zwift directly.

  • You can do both. stryd can broadcast to both the 945 and the watch but in this case you don't need the virtual run app.

I have a nordictrack at home with a runn and don't need the app (I wouldn't recommand using only the watch, it's not really good if you want real pace)
At work I have a myrunn treadmil and it's BT only that means until now I had to choose between connecting it to zwift or my watch and now I can connect it to my watch that broadcasts it to zwift !

What this app is for is when :

    1. you don't have a footpod or you want to get rid of it and want to run with zwift
    2. you have a bluetooth only footpod or treadmill that can only broadcast to one device

warning : the watch boadcasts only in bluetooth so connecting it to your Pc may or may not work

  • Wow, this really simplifies things then.  No longer do you have to connect your peripherals to your 945 AND Zwift.  You just have Zwift remember your 945 and it will then collect the pace/distance/Cadence/HR.  That's pretty nifty.

  • This is exactly why we've developed this App. The idea was to simplify the pairing process and allow users to connect one "sensor" to Zwift rather than multiple sensors.

  • this is all awesome information; thanks for answering my question(s), everyone!

  • This pretty cool. I have had a garmin footpod for many years that just works but always nice to have an alternative. When is it coming to the F6 series watch?

I also would love a new footpod that is garmin but enhanced kind of like a stryd one.

  • Somehow I'm having problems with this feature. However, I have no experience with Zwift so far so it may be my fault.

My environment: FR 945 with newest beta and the virtual run app installed. Stryd footpod and Garmin HRM-Tri.

After logging in into the Zwift app I'm on the pairing screen. There are three "pairing options": "Run speed", "Cadence" and "heart rate". Then I start the "virtual run" app on my FR 945. It says "ready to pair", I see my heartrate on the left; Stryd is also connected. Down the bottom there is the bluetooth symbol showing my connected phone "Huawei P30 Pro".

Regardless which field I click on in the Zwift app there is no option "FR 945". When clicking "Heart Rate" in the app ther is no pairing device/sensor. In "cadence" and "run speed" there is only the Stryd displayed.

I expected the FR945 to be displayed as a sensor itself in all three fields. Did I get this wrong? Anyone else having this problem?

  • Close Garmin Connect on the phone (BLE only supports ONE connection. Two apps would mean two connections. After that, you can find the FR945 in the apps.

Its only a problem if Connect and Zwift are running on the same device, if you search with a second device, it will take over the FR945.

On iOS its the same behavior.
