Vo2 Max - why does indoor cycling count, but indoor running does not?

The Performance stats on my 945 get updated with new "Cycling Vo2 Max" values when I've done a cycling workout on Zwift, but my "Running Vo2 Max" stats do not when I've done a running activity on Zwift.

I have connected sensors to the 945 for both activities - Tacx Smart Trainer for Power with Wahoo Speed & Cadence sensors for cycling, and a Zwift footpod for running - I use the same Wahoo Tickr HR chest strap for both.

Can I get indoor treadmill workouts to count towards my Running Vo2 Max? All I can think of is that the Zwift footpod isn't sending the same amount of data as an HRM-Run would.

An outdoors run does give me credit, using only the running dynamics generated by the 945 - so why not indoors too?

I tend to avoid running outdoors when the weather is cold as it always seems to trigger some kind of chest problem!

  • It's because a power meter sends real values, power values are the same whether you're indoor or outdoor.
When you run on a treadmill, even if using a footpod, it is just an estimation of your pace, so garmin doesn't take into account this "estimation"

  • They also can't know the incline setting on the treadmill, which has a big effect on effort for a given pace, even if they trusted the pace readings.
