issue with gps 2.70 - lost recording

so, sequence of events:

  • watch on sw 4.00, sensor 3.20, gps whatever came before 2.70
  • removed spotify and set music to control phone - per instructions for battery saving (had been experiencing excess battery consumption). normal restart of watch. run using gps/glonass with All-In-One data field. battery usage seemed  higher than the previous excessive usage. recharge and hard restart watch.
  • update gps to 2.70, restart watch
  • 30 min run, watch using gps/glonass with All-In-One data field. took 5 mins to lock satellites. stop run and set as resume later
  • volunteering as parkrun results recorder using parkrun app - requires phone in airplane mode.
  • ready to resume run, phone airplane mode off
  • resume run after awaiting gps lock
  • noticed 20mins later that distance and total ascent were zero even though pace,hr,navigation, segments, strava beacon were all working
  • finished run, attempt to save, stays as "saving" for at least 30mins
  • hard restart watch, but recording was gone from watch, nothing synchs to garmin connect, nothing in Strava

anyone else experience this or similar?

  • I highly doubt that had anything to do with the GPS update which just updated almanac in firmware.

"- Update almanac data to prevent long fix times."

And after update 5 mins to get lock? How did you update it? Why didn't you have up to date CPE?

I would guess that there something in that long sequence of events which caused it to do something weird, it might be reproducible if you just try from after "update gps to 2.70", or it might not be.

  • ok - so this has happened multiple times in the last 2 days - runs and walks - I see elapsed time, lap time, pace, and GPS works fine and sends a Strava Beacon to safety contacts, and the watch tells me about segments coming up, but I get no distance displayed or recorded, and when I go to Save the run, the watch just hangs displaying "Saving" but simply doesn't complete that process. A long reset/restart works, but the recording is gone.

Just now I have deleted some long 50km courses that I had imported into Garming Connect as GPX files, and then synched to my watch (was not using them for the above vanished recordings), and tried a short walk, and the watch operated normally, showed and recorded distance, saved, synched all the way into Strava.

So maybe the GPX's were the issue - storage space maybe? - but there were absolutely no error messages or warnings on the watch or in Garmin Connect (app or web page) or in Garmin Express
