High Battery Drain - Potential Workaround

The below steps are meant to address complaints of increased battery drain that some have reported after recent updates. These steps may not work for 100% of users experiencing this, and for those of you please know we are continuing investigation into a permanent fix.

Also, we understand that there are other threads on these topics and ask that users only respond to this post if you have attempted the below steps. Whether this works or not, we would like to hear that to aid us moving forward. Thank you all for your patience while we look into this.

  1. From the Settings->Music menu, change the music provider to either “Control Phone” or “My Music”. Exit the settings menu to the main watch face.
  2. Power off the watch via the normal method, and then power the device back on. The battery drain should return to normal for the duration of the power cycle.
  3. If you prefer to use another music provider, please follow steps 1 and 2 before selecting your preferred music provider.

If your device restarts for any reason, or if your battery consumption increases again, please repeat these steps.

  • I have done the 3 steps described by Garmin-Blake several times, as requested in the last sentence.

My Battery Widget say the following:

Long-term avg: 0,185 %/hr (seems to me unrealistic low, but that's what the widget say)

    since last Charge: 0,689 %/hr

Actually I have 83% Battery and 24h are done since the last charging = 0,71 %/hr.

In the last 24h I have no activity recorded.

I have PulsOx on all day and I use Crystal as watch face.

  • I think you need to reset your long term avg and try to go "business as usual" over a couple of discharge cycles (from 100% to near flat) to get a better estimation. Disregard the discharge rate from 100% to 90% level because it is not linear and the discharge rate will always be low near full.

  • I have never used any music streaming services on the watch and never uploaded any music. I just use Control Phone function.

In this case I don't how to implement the procedure. I tried to set again Control Phone and restarted the watch but the battery widget tells me the same consumption per hour for the last 36 hours since the procedure was done, which is 0.7xx.

Please let me know what to do to have the same consumption I had with SW 2.60 which was 0.3xx/h.

  • Same here - i followed the instructions(switching to phone control) and the battery usage skyrocketed. Now i can't go back, as i have no songs saved on the watch (my music) ?!?!? Wow. Just Wow. i just feel like a beta tester now...

  • After an initial improvement, mine eventually leveled out to my usual .7-.8% per hour.  So no improvement.

  • i added a song to the watch changed back and deleted it later on. checking if this brings battery consumption back to normal.

  • I  was coming here to say I did the same thing, mostly.

Plugged watch into Express (PC), deleted all music streaming apps, added one track (and left it on the watch), switched to "My Music," Powered down and on, and did see a change. It isn't amazing, but it did reduce power consumption, though my battery widget said otherwise.

  • I am experiencing exactly the same. Battery consumption went down again a little bit.

  • In conclusion, what we have
    1. Several different issues with battery drain.
    2. Potential workaround may work for the issue with music provider “Control Phone”.
    3. Double from doubled battery drain. How to make things better? It needs to be made worse, and then returned as it was!

    Seems, thats all.

  • I have had this issue of high battery drain since 3.9. I have tried the above which helps a little, but as others have highlighted there are other issues. Some observations from me:

    1. Putting the watch into airplane mode helps the most and reduces the drain back to what it was in 3.3 when it seemed it’s best. But there is still another issue.

    2. Even with the watch in airplane mode and the above workaround it has random periods of very high battery drain. Yesterday and today between 4am and 7am (ish) the watch was using 3% an hour. No idea why - I was sleeping! Others have noted high drain too randomly.
