Interpreting Lactate Threshold values

Hi everyone,

I'm trying to understand how Lactate Threshold works but I'm a bit confused. In the last few weeks I went from an LT of 5:25min/km - 170bpm to 5:22min/km - 168bpm (see below screenshots). So that means (if I'm getting it right) that I have to run faster to improve further (from 5:25 to 5:22 min/km). That to me means I've improved my fitness level... but why the bpm went down from 170 to 168? Does that mean my body can sustain a slightly faster pace at a lower HR? (which again means a fitter body?)

Also, in those weeks I was following a Garmin Coach program (Half Marathon). I've decided to reschedule my events and I'm training for a full Marathon now so I cancelled that plan and joined another one (Intermediate Marathon) which is not a Garmin Coach one. Since then my watch hasn't logged new values for LT. Does that mean it hasn't changed since last time or it's simply not recorded if I don't use a Garmin Coach plan? If that's the case how can I keep an eye on my LT now?

  • Hi, yes I was thinking to do exactly that and see what happens. The new LT was automatically calculated (and I accepted it) after an Intervals workout.

  • I don't think there's any difference between auto-detection during normal runs vs. detection during the LT test.

The LT test is just a structured workout designed to increase the chance of detection.

  • Today i did the first LT test on my 945.  after several LT fixes on my watch over the period.

But as i doupt the value of my pace and HF what Garmin gave on the watch. HF 154 and pace 6:23

My HF i agree that this is around 154 for LT but the pace should be around 5:37 rather than 6:23 in my opinion.

i allways understood that your run time over a 10 km training is your LT value.

Well lately i ran 10 km at 1:00:45. hour

And this run was not on my max (no race)

So average pace on 10 km was 6:04 and average HF was 154

One week before i ran 8 km with pace 5:52 and average HF 157

and in the grapf in GCM i can see that my HF en pace is crossing each other on about the pace of 5:35

is this calculation by Garmin correct ?

  • I don't trust the LT automatic calculation anymore to be honest... In the future I will only trust my 10k best time as you mentioned. Every time I do threshold intervals it suggests me new LT's that don't make any sense...

  • the best thing is to run a LT Test for example every 8-12 weeks on the same track, so it's more compareable, you have nothing from it when it changes every second run or so automatic

  • I totally agree! ;-)

  • I partially agree. doing a LT test every run is not neccesary. BUT. my problem is that this test, which is in the watch, is not working correcty as you can see in my post.

Also the automatic function is not working properly.

I think Garmin has a problem to solve in this.

  • you run 10km during guided LT Test?

  • No. I only did the LT test run in Garmin Watch. Which provisies you With zeverlap steps of 4 mins runs increading speed an HF by scedule.

for you info. My Max hf is 177 at thuis moment.

  • you can try to set your maxHR to a lower value, e.g.: 167 or 157 and see, if the LT Test will detect your max HR too during the Test, one italien user (i don't remember his name) here on the board tried this and it worked for him
