SW 4.00: 50% more Battery drain

again the Battery drain in this Firmware is very high, as i have done this note by Former Member nothing changed:

Note: We understand that there are users who have reported decreased battery life since the 3.90 update. There is nothing in 4.00 that addresses this and we would first ask that anyone seeing this symptom perform a hard reset by holding the power button down until the device turns off before charging to 100% again. If this is not successful then you are experiencing an issue that we are actively investigating.

In 24 hours you will lost ~15%, but when you disable the Phone Connection on the watch himself like this:

the battery drain in 24 hours is only 7%

for me it's clear that more or less

Sensor Hub 3.20 or

ANT/BLE/BT 5.01

causes this issue!

Former Member  Please take a look with your Team on it, or better, gives us a Tool for Power Management like on Fenix 6!

EDITH:

could it be, that only watches affected, where Android 10 phones used?

is there someone who have probs with iOS or Android 9?

EDITH2:

confirmed drain on Android 9 and 10

any1 can confirm on iOS?

EDITH3:

confirmed drain on Android 9 and 10 and on latest iOS!

  • After the update to 4.00 I followed Garmin-Blake's instructions: Pressed the upper left button for > 15 seconds and charged to 100%. Before, I uninstalled battery widget because I wasn't sure that it didn't drain the battery. Since then my battery usage is about the same as it was with  3.30. I just had a 40 minutes run with music + GPS + OHR and it took about 8% battery. About 10% for a whole day without activity. Had a way higher battery usage with 3.90. Galaxy S10e connected permanently via bluetooth.

  • what OS do you have on your S10e (Android 9 or Android 10)?

  • I have Android 10.

    thanks!

@all: hope we can sort this out, that only useres with Android 10 have the prob with battery drain?

    I have a rev D and Android 9. (Samsung)

Since Update to 3.90 my batterie drain doubled. Since then I deactivated BT completely and the problem is gone. But i don't wanna miss calls etc.

    I have these settings:

    - BT on

    - Notifications off, except phone calls

    - 24hr HR

    - pulsOX only at night

    From IQ Store:

    - No frills watchface

    - battery monitor

    - spotify

    - dozen run data field

The higher drain accured also during "idle" without activities. It was significantly higher (many times higher than before SW3.90) while training with ANT+ HR and BT headphones, but no GPS.

  • So, there used to be (or maybe there is, and I can't find it in the app's many sub-menus) some Bluetooth connection aid in the app. I don't know if it's there and is toggled on. Or if It's messing with the BT and the watch, or that connection aid is now baked into the app and its original function is always running.

If it's still a toggleable ability, please someone tell me where the hell it is, if it's now just part of the app, perhaps that's the culprit? Whatever protocol they have in the app (I'm speaking solely of the android version here) isn't playing nice with the BT signal from the watch because of it?

Also, back when the original Fenix 5 came out and the bevy of connection issues with that series, there was a 3rd party app that helped with the BT connections with the watch, the app, and the phone. I don't remember the name of the app, but I believe it had its own diagnostic tools that helped make sense of how the watch interacted with the app and phone via BT (and also would toggle on and off the BT connection on a schedule to make sure there weren't any hang-ups with the signal).

If you used this app and you remember the name of it, I'd appreciate it. I'm curious if this might answer some of the problems happening with this update.

    Update: I found it. https://play.google.com/store/apps/details?id=mabi.android.gcmrunner

I'm going to play around with it for a while and see if there's any info that can be gleaned from it.

  • My battery consumption is about double of what it was in 3.30 (~0.3% -> ~0.6%). My watch is connected to a Samsung S8+ with Android 9.

  • Before the last software update 4.0 I had a loss of about 0.25% per hour, according to the well-known battery winget, but with the installation of the update the consumption went up to about 0.65% per hour. I tried to restart to fix the problem and to no avail. I didn't hard reset the settings, but I removed the battery wingets and others, such as VDOT 2 and the final Surge. Also the extra watch face, putting one of the Garmin installed. Result: In 3 days I had a battery charge of exactly 8%, that's 2.67% 24 hours, which is of course even better than the results with update 3.9 (without the add-ons I removed). As I said to me this worked and definitely some of the add-ons I removed are responsible for the huge battery loss. I personally appreciate that the battery winget may be responsible, but I haven't tried it yet, maybe I'm wrong, we'll see.I also removed the Garmin water app. I don't know if that helped either.

  • it looks like, we have the battery drain on Android 9 and 10, is there someone out who have the drain on iOS?

  • I don't want to cloud the issue, but I disabled the phone connection this morning and the battery usage seemed even worse. I was polling the battery widget using the start stop button and the usage since last view was constantly rising and falling.
