FR945 and HRM-Tri going crazy

I've been using my FR945 and the HRM-Tri for about 6 months now and everything was great until about 2 weeks ago, I've been getting some weird readings for the heart rate and the connection with the HRM seems really not stable. Here is an example of the HR jumping from 150 to 70 non-stop :

I'm not sure any of this is related but a couple of things have happened in the past 2 weeks, I've had to replace the HRM's battery and there has been some software update for the 945.

Is anyone else experiencing this ? Is it a known problem ?
Is there any fix ?

  • Check the battery status in sensor options (or put in one wich you can assure its full)

Tighten the strap a little bit

Wet the sensor patches on the strap.

In my eyes it looks like a connectivity problem between your strap and your body.

  • I had the same issue with FR935 and HRM-Run. See screenshot for one of
I had similar issue with FR 935. See screenshot for one of extreme cases.

I end up changing the watch. Actually, I simply bought FR945.

See the link to my post about it, if you want more details.

  • From experience:

The ANT+ signal doesn't carry though the body well. If you're doing something where the watch is behind you (arms behind your back) the strap loses connection. Happens to me all the time when I am doing something on the ground and my wrist is under my back. If you're doing something new, that could be the case.

Try unpairing the strap and re-pairing it. Sometimes after the battery died and you replace it, the connections between the strap and watch get, wonky.

Also, check the electrodes, any residue can affect it. Some people wet them, I always use electrode gel to get it started and that's never failed me.

And lastly, I hate to state it, but I've had Tri's die on me after six months. It could be the case, even after changing the battery.

I had an HRM-Run (the podded one with a replaceable strap) and found it died shortly after a battery change. It seems like others have reported similar - as soon as you open it, it's on borrowed time.

Symptoms were very similar to what you've described in this thread - drop-outs, sometimes I'd get massive spikes (like, 200bpm when I was doing light cardio at 130bpm).

I went so far as to replace the strap - no luck.

I'm just not confident in the longevity of Garmin HRMs anymore. I have an original HRM1G (hard plastic strap) going strong but went with the Polar H10 for soft straps.

  • I think I'm on my 4-5th TRI in about 5 years. The longest one lasted over a year and half the shortest hit 4 months and it was after the battery died, which should have been a warning. My current one (approx six months old ironically) just needed a battery change and so far, so good.

What I've learned here to mitigate something going haywire after opening the unit is to be sure the strap is bone dry. ANY moisture of any kind is going to poison the battery swap and ruin the strap.

I would really love for them to make a removable pod-based strap that's also rechargeable.

  • My HRM-Run survived 6 years, 6000kms and is still going strong.
It got its third strap now because the pod seems indestructible.

  • t got its third strap now because the pod seems indestructible.

Mine too. I have a couple of spare straps because that's where the problem usually i.

  • I'm experiencing something similar but I know it's a problem with the watch. Durning my indoor sessions my footpod, power pedals, and hrm-tri disconnect and connect at the same time. It has been horrible for the past month and believe it started after the 3 30 firmware.

Garmin says they're on the problem but still have no solution.

  • Well my HRM-Run that came with my FR-920 lasted 4 years. The companion Garmin band just 2, so I replaced it with a Polar soft strap. So far so good until I saw a crack into the plastic near one of the metal button...  water and sweat entered into the pod :-(  As far I as understand, the Polar soft strap was the problem, the snap was strong (stronger than the original Garmin), so every-time I decoupled the pod from the band, the plastic that surrounded the button suffered.

After testing a few things, I finally found that a tiny bit of humidity got inside the HRM case.
So I did a full clean up and air dried it, everything is finally back to normal.

Thanks everyone for you help! Smiley
