Height (in the Altimeter) is incorrect.

I notice that the value in the Altimeter screen on the 945 is constantly incorrect.

Once i try to calibrate, take the choice with GPS!, it says go to open field. There is where i am at that time.

Once i suceed to finish the calibration the height is much better but after a short while it is again incorrect

Height is around 50 meters whilie i live in the netherlands a few meter below the water surface.

Somebody recognize this ?

  • did you enable auto calibration?
GPS Calibration is the worst way to calibrate (because in the GPS height, there is the most tolerances) in your location. I would use the digital height model (DHM in English watches, DEM in German ones).
     What is a "short while"?
Does it drift or jump? If it drifts, does it stop at 50 or does it go further?

  • I Enable auto calibratiom but this did not work.
i tried both by the way to fix it DHM en GPS.

very dificult to fix new realistic height.
It drifts untill 50 meter and stops. All the times.

  • I never got a proper altitude reading with either 935 nor 945...

  • I hoor Garmin van fix it. My former forerunner 920xt was Always correct.

  • I always heard a good feedback on the 920xt but had the 935 and now on my 2nd 945 (RMA) and the altitude is not good. I am just above sea level and sometimes my runs are, according to Garmin, below the water level... I do hope to see it working fine but just gave up at this moment...  It is not right but that's the reality

  • Are you calibrating the altimeter only, or both the altimeter and barometer?  If it's just the altimeter, I may have found your problem.  Try this.  Look at your barometer and note the reading.  Now calibrate whatever your altimeter is displaying by + or - 400 feet.  Go back to your barometer.  Notice how it changed?  So, if your only calibrating the altimeter (BeneGi is right saying DEM is much better than GPS by the way), and not the barometer to the correct pressure, you're going to have problems.  The barometer is then going to detect the correct pressure and either rise or decline.  "Auto calibration" then does it's best to figure if this change in pressure was due to weather or actual elevation gain/loss.  If the barometer reacts to this change fairly quickly, the watch "thinks" it must be due to elevation change and your calibrate height is now screwed up.  For your readings to be near accurate, both have to be calibrated correctly at the same time.  If you are calibrating both and I've just wasted a minute of your life, my apologies.  I hope this helps.

  • Txs! I calibrate both now. It seems to be working. I Will monitor it for some days now.

  • That's good news... Please report back and I may give it another shot!

    Cheers!

@tess  Thanks for your explanation! Very informative.

  • Again after several days the altimeter gives the wrong hight. It now fluctuate between -1 meter to 268 meter above see level. How often must i calabrate both Presure en antimeter ?
