required periodic syncing for Amazon Music - why? (no changes to playlist)

Periodically the watch asks me to sync to Amazon Music (the free service) via my WiFi when I want to play music from there, even though I haven't made any changes to the playlist.

  1. Does anyone know why?
  2. Does anyone know how frequently or the timing of this?

The first time this caught me totally by surprise and I was in Europe only to discover that the music I had loaded in the US was no longer available. I was just about to head out for a run now and the same happened. Luckily I was home and could easily link up to my home WiFi.

If knew when/why this is happening, I could avoid these surprises.

Thanks.

  • I have to update my Spotify playist monthly.  It's a paid subscription, but I suspect Amazon requires the same as the watch doesn't know if you're using the free or paid for music. Just speculating as I don't know for sure.

  • I think it’s because of DRM. DRM is according tomGarmin also the reason, why the watches don’t save the music played in the fit file anymore.

  • Ah .. that makes sense, thanks, .. so you have to sync on the same date every month? Do you know if there's a way to force the sync earlier?

In my case I traveled to the Berlin marathon near the end of September, everything was working fine in Chicago, but once I got there I got the sync via wifi request. If this happens near or on the same date every month, I can potentially anticipate it.

  • Interesting .. thanks!

  • My billing cycle is on the 18th.  I never noticed if it was on the same day, but it's always around the 18th of the month.  I don't think an earlier force sync is possible.  What happens is the watch will say I need to update my playlist, it verifies my account is still active and then allows the music to play.  This too happens around the 18th of each month.

  • Thanks ... I appreciate the info. I don't have a billing cycle per se as I'm using the free service, but the sync request seems to happen near the end of the month, so I'm going to try to keep an eye on it and see if I can narrow down the window.

  • I think you can force the sync when you sync the music library.
Long press "down", select library, scroll up (its faster) until you read Refresh? download (Download aktualisieren). I don't know the English wording because mine is in German.

  • Since FW 3.3 my Amazon Music app "experience" has been "hosed."

None of my playlists sync any longer without a "sync error" message.

When I go to listen to them, most are only partial playlists (i.e. songs are missing)

Some of my playlists are completely greyed out and will not sync.

I've already tried signing out of the app, deleting all the playlists and resyncing them, restarting the watch, etc.  Nothing seems to help.

  • Thanks .. super helpful. I wonder if I did this a week before the usual date if it still would want a sync a week later? I guess I'll have to experiment a bit, though with the once-every-month event it might be tricky

Bin ein ehemaliger Hamburger, also verstehe auch Deutsch :) .. though at this point write much more easily in English.

  • Wir sprachen bereits darüber das du ein Hamburger Jung bist, Ich versuche nur die Infos hier im Forum auf Englisch zu schreiben. Finde es doof, wenn andere dann aus Sprachgründen ausgeschlossen werden.
