Overkill for HIIT sprinting and weight lifting?

Hello.

I am thinking about getting my first fitness watch. I'm pretty late the to smart/fitness device world!

I do 3 intense HIIT interval sprint trainings (outside) and 3 weight lifting workouts weekly.

I am interested in getting more metrics and visibility about my runs mostly, but also about my weight lifting, and general fitness. I am mostly interested in HR, speed, V02 max, elevation gain, distance.

Phone-less running sounds like a cool bonus for me as well.  (music mostly, as I dont do many long range runs anymore and am less interested in GPS tracking)

Would the Forerunner 945 be a good fit for my needs or should I go for some cheaper watch? Also, I assume I will need a HR strap in addition to the watch to get the mos accurate readings and metrics?

Thanks in advance!

  • Yes, this would be overkill. On the other hand, if you can afford it - why not.

You might consider checking out the Forerunner 645 if music is important. The other Garmin option would be a Forerunner 245 but it lacks a barometric altimeter (you said you want to see elevation gain). Nowadays even the entry models cover the basic fitness metrics (like VO2 max estimation). If you are willing to skip both music and altimeter and just want a great affordable fitness watch, then consider the FR 45.

The HR strap is needed to get reliable measurements, yes. Especially since you do sprints. Optical heart rate is very slow to respond to changes in intensity.

PS: I hate to say it, but for more "casual" fitness usage (not doing long distance stuff) a Apple Watch might also be a great choice because it is much better as a smart watch. Garmin devices are primarily fitness watches with some limited connectivity, e.g. showing notifications.
