Manual lap counting during pool swimming

Hi all,

is there an option to swtich off the automated lap function during indoor swimming, and instead manually count laps by pressing the back button?

The automated detection does not work with suitalbe precision (typically +25% laps, maybe due to my miserable swimming style, but this should not play a role here).

Best,

  • Just use the manual swimming drills, there you start your drill with the lap button, then after you're finished you press the lap button again and are prompted to enter the distance you swam. When you're done you press the back button on any other screen and it will go back to normal mode.

  • Hi BobMiles,

thanks for this answer. This is indeed an option, however this would require pressing 3 buttons after each lap (1x finish for current lap with the lap button, 1x confirm distance with start button, 1x restart lap with lap button), plus around 1-2 seconds which the watch needs to switch through the menu. This is not very comfortable if you do 40 or 80 laps (25 m..).

    Is there any other option?

     Thanks

  • Has this been resolved?

  • There really isn't anything to be resolved as the OP isn't reporting a bug. To improve the accuracy of the pool swim I would recommend checking out this article here, Tips to Improve Swim Distance Accuracy. I think what Bob was saying is if you want to manually count how far you swam you could put the watch into drill mode and if you know how many laps you swam you can set the correct distance. That would give you full control of how far you swam.

  • My forerunner 245 has the ability to count laps manually while running, without stopping. Why can't the same be done for pool swimming?

I bought the watch so I wouldn't have to count the laps, particularly if I am doing 50+ laps or swimming for over an hour.

Or, are you implying that the following should be acceptable:

"this would require pressing 3 buttons after each lap (1x finish for current lap with the lap button, 1x confirm distance with start button, 1x restart lap with lap button), plus around 1-2 seconds which the watch needs to switch through the menu."

I am experiencing the same issue, spent over an hour trying to find an answer. Unsuccessfully.

And you don't have to count the lengths manually. Provided you swim properly the 945 will count each length perfectly well. You can also set an alert every x number of lengths to help you keep aware of the number of lengths although I've found I can get a glimpse of the number of lengths during the glide after turning at the wall.

As the OP mentioned (over 2 years ago) if you don't have a good swim style then problems can arise. And that has not changed and is unlikely to change over time.

If your swimming style does result in frequent missed lengths and you want to count them manually then there is the option to press the lap button twice at the end of each length - once to stop, again to start; takes a split second.

The other option is to get some lessons to improve your swimming style.

  • Great to hear that some else has the same issue - and Sorry @Philipshambrook: I don't get the point why I should align my swimming style to the algorithm of my sports watch. Thats not the way how things should go when I spend >500€ on a gadget.
