Battery from 100% to 0% overnight (Pulse Ox off) v3.30

I'd like to start saying I've been praising the latest update (3.30), especially when it comes down to battery consumption. I was one of many people complaining about the battery since this watch came out in May. My 945 battery got so much better since I installed this version, but something really weird happened. Last night, before I went to bed (10pm), I charged the 945 to 100%. This morning, when I was having breakfast (7am) I noticed my watch was off. When I turned it on I surprised to see the battery at 0%. Wtf? Pulse Ox was off by the way.

I'm currently charging it again and I hope it was an one-off thing, but it definitely makes reduce my trust on this watch even more.

Has anybody seen it before?

  • Please try a hard reset (holding the power button in until the device shuts down) before charging it up completely. This shouldn't be necessary, but it often can clear up odd issues like this. That type of battery drain is definitely outside of the specs for the 945 and this should help resolve that.

  • FW Update runs silently during sleep/night. No any confirmation before sleep. Before sleep my watch was at 28%. For next 4 hours FW update completely drained the battery. Next 4 hours watch was dead until I charged it in the morning. As I know, it is very bad to deep discharge Li-ion batteries. Additionally, on FW 2.80 I have 5.5% per day. Now on FW 3.30 I have 10.5% per day. BT/PulseOx OFF.

In my opinion Auto Update feature should be disabled by default. Only manual update. Until the following will be implemented:
    - Show confirmation for update.
    - Do not update FW on low battery (<50%).
    - Do hard reset automatically right after update.

Garmin have very bad FW update process which leads to different issues... Also, I do not know if old issue with battery is fixed in 3.30, but Garmin, certainly, made a new one for others.

    Dixi.

  • Thanks Former Member. I was already recharging so I wasn't able to try the hard reset. But the watch seems fine now. It  went down 1% in the past 4 hours. I will keep an eye on it, if it happens again I will do the hard reset before contacting Garmin.

  • This has nothing to do with the automatic update. My watch has been running the latest version since it was release a few weeks ago. I also never had issues with this feature and as far I know, you can disable it if you prefer.

  • I had a similar issue last night. I’ve been really pleased with battery life with 3.30 - definitely an improvement. But last night it went from 25% to flat. I hard reset it after the software update (habit now). Will post again if it happens again.

  • you can disable it if you prefer.

I prefer now, since I experienced the issue described above. And disabling auto update was first thing what I did.

I also never had issues with this feature

I am really glad for you. For me this issue was at first time and due to:

    1) low battery level
    2) update during a sleep, when I can't react properly.
    3) bad firmware with abnormal battery drain

Who knows what was at the middle of night with my watches? Update has finished before empty battery (most probable) or it was not finished properly at the end? Why I should play in this game?

This has nothing to do with the automatic update.

English is not my native language. Maybe I was not clear enough. I provided above several options how to avoid similar issue without disabling auto update. But ball completely on Garmin's side.

  • Also just had my battery drain to 0% twice in 1 day (watch updated to 3.30 over a week ago).

This morning my watch died during my run - I think it was on about 30% at the start. I then charged to 100% and now it's dead again after ~7hrs. PulseOx is also off on mine. Will have to wait till I get home to recharge... Hopefully this isn't going to be a common occurrence.

  • Something like that happened to me previously on 2.80: unexpected drain, followed with fast discharging only (100>0% in 8h). Until that moment everything worked fine (it was just 3 weeks old watch). Nothing helped: off+on, hard reset, update to 3.30, factory defaults reset (even without phone pairing). I suppose it has to be some hardware battery issue. Currently waiting for the result of a warranty claim (repair/replacement).
