Should I upgrade

I am posting that in this forum. i currently have a 935 and i am very pleased with it. i would like to upgrade to a fenix 6. this is the 945 forum so i have to assume that users have upgraded their 935 in this one more than the fenix 6 forum.

I do not need music or wifi. i just like the look of the fenix 6 although it may be a little heavy. 80 grams is practically twice the weight of my 935.

So, are they advantages to upgrade? i know that now you have a load balance that tells you which zone you workout the most. maybe vo2max is better although i read some posts that it may not.

gps on the 935 is perfect. is the 945 ok with the chipset.

I just read that in one year a 955 and fenix 7 will come out. so do i want to spend $600 for one year knowing that the new watches will have more features.

What do you think ?

Best

  • I can't help you with your choice, it's somewhat personal and depends on your specific needs. However, new and better tech will always come out in the future, you have to decide how much benefit you might gain from having a device now vs waiting.

E.g., I bought the 945 in May right when it came out. I expected there to be some potential problems (new hardware after all), and may have preferred to get a Rev D device now than Rev A back then, however, I was preparing for two marathons this fall (Berlin and NYC) and definitely wanted to have the new metrics of the 945 available at the start of my training cycle, so that influenced my decision heavily.

So, if you are happy with the 935 and can wait, perhaps that's what you should do, however, it's pretty much guaranteed that when you get your 955 or Fenix 7 there will be talk of the 965 / Fenix 8 :)

  • Thanks, which new metrics influenced your decision. i am not a runner. i mainly do strength, cardio and bike riding.

  • I liked the training load metrics for the most part. But I was also coming from a 230, so there were a lot of other extras I liked, such as the ability to store music/podcasts (no need for an extra device), the maps, better VO2 Max calculations,  and the generally newer tech.

I'm sure there were other extras can't recall, but I was ready and the training load was useful for my marathon prep this summer.

Much of my info came from here (no surprise) https://www.dcrainmaker.com/2019/04/garmin-forerunner-945-multisport-watch-in-depth-review.html

  • Well, 935 has training load and training effect. i use that . this is why i like garmin. i do not care about music and maps. the only thing i see would the the training balance. to see how much i train in each zone but do not know if that justify the upgrade. Thank you for your input. Appreciate that.

  • Yes, I think what you call training balance I called training load? The 935 / 945 difference is much smaller than for me coming from the 230.

Good luck in making a decision, perhaps others will chime in.

I wouldn't upgrade if you dont care about music or maps.

The 935 has better gps and better battery-life, thats way more important imho.

  • Just received the Black Friday email from Garmin. 945 was $100 US lower. No discounts on F6. I would be really surprised if Garmin released an F7 next year, maybe an F6 plus. If weight is a concern for the F6 look at the Titanium version. When I returned the F6 pro Sapphire due to hardware issues I ordered the Titanium version and am very happy with it.

  • Get a fenix5+ if it's for the looks...

Maps, music and garmin pay are the biggest deals... I use maps, no music and pay isn't availabel with my bank (otherwise I'd happily use it). Coming from a 935 it's largely comparable...

GPS indeed a bit better on the 935, but fine on the 945 for me. OHR seems more iffy for me on the 945 but using a Polar OH1 most of the time now anyway. Battery if just fine for me on the 945, I think I get about 12 days with 3 workouts a week and that might have been 14 max on the 935 but doesn't really differ in my feeling. (Most I got on the 945 was about 21 days without any activities and really using it in basic smartwatch mode).

Can you poinit me to where you read about the 955/F7 coming out next year? I only saw hints to the existence in sources and configs but that could easily still mean they won't be released for a loooong time...

  • Ah yes, Garmin Pay was another feature I liked, just as an additional backup in case I needed access to money unexpectedly during a run - works for me with my bank. I recently paid for my coffee at a Starbucks as a test, neat to just have that option on my wrist.

Music and maps have been great for me too.

    Easy upgrade decision from 230 -> 945 .. not so clear for 935 -> 945.

  • what bank is this?
