Just got updated to 3.30, first ride has 80% GPS dropout

Not a great start - my watch notified me it had been updated when I looked at it this morning, 3.30 plus the sensor and GPS updates.

The commute ride this morning recorded with those updates recorded no speed/position at the start for the first couple of mins, then recorded them for about 10 seconds, then nothing for 13 mins, then recorded OK for the last 10 mins.

The other sensors (cadence, HR) recorded fine the whole time.

This was with GPS + Galileo

I've not had this happen before the update to 3.30, normally recordings have been fine.

I don't know if this is a problem in the base FW update or the GPS update.

EDIT: As pointed out below, GPS wasn't updated. so it is likely an issue in the base FW.

  • Here's some additional info/background on the current state of Galileo. GLONASS might be a better choice for now. YMMV.

  • Sure, but this is using GPS + Galileo, not just Galileo.

Even if the entire Galileo constellation was offline, it should still work using the GPS birds.

  • Agreed, but this wasn't meant as explanation why you encountered the problem, just as some background on Galileo and which system to use in conjunction with GPS (I don't think you can even un-select GPS, it's always part of the location service if location is enabled).

  • You know, I thought the same thing, and I don't know if Galileo is just flaky or what, but I've done a handful of runs with Galileo and the results were comically off compared to what they should be.  Maybe it's because of where I live (upper Wisconsin), but it's beyond unreliable for me.  I'm sure there are other areas of the world that get a far better experience, but, maybe it's possible that the watch is taking bad coordinates from the Galileo sats?

  • No, there are no area that are better covered than others (technically higher latitudes do have better coverage though I believe). But Galileo, due to its patchy coverage, is worse in urban area (aka urban canyon).
