HRV Stress score Vs 24 Stress score

Confused to what the 2 are trying to do here? I see the the HRV stress that requires 3 minutes and an external strap (to be recorded standing?!) But, then we have the 24 hour OHR sensed stress widget that populates a graph singularly and in correlation to Body battery?!

I'm wondering if the HRV score is an antiquated method adopted from other edge devices that don't have onboard optical sensors and has just been ported over. It's been a feature on my Edge computers for awhile.

Trawling the net, I notice a feature from First beat and their introduction to all day stress. Got a feeling, that if I was to send a request to Garmin, they wouldn't have a clue either. Just for the record, I'm familiar with sensors and HRV, use both HRV4TRAINING and Whoop to validate.

  • HRV requires a strap as it is a measurement of the R-R interval of the PQRS complex generated from the electrical signals of the heart when it beats. Optical measurement at the wrist is measuring the P-P (peak to peak) measurement obtained from the wrist pulse optically then magically transformed into something that might be close to R-R but cannot be as precise.

  • Appreciate the response, I understand the differences in PPG to ECG.  But the question wasn't about the validation of the sensors accuracy, but to why there are 2 applications on the device and whether the 24 Hour Stress is indeed calculating HRV via, whatever proprietary algorithm.

  • Since you know HRV detects the electrical signal of the heart you'll know HRV can be determined from short samples. It's not an antiquated method but the more accurate way of determining HRV. Since it needs the strap that renders it impractical to measure all-day HRV and use that to determine 24 h stress.

Which is where OHR fits with it's purported ability to guesstimate HRV from PP but requires a lot more data to feed the algorithm.

At least that's my assumption for the two methods to indicate how tired you might be.

  • Bingo!! That's the one I was looking for! "Guesstimate"

So the 24hr is a guesstimation built around concept of HRV.  Incidentally, that's what the Performance condition purportedly sets out to do.  HR, HRV, Vo2 , etc, etc.. algorithms galore - there is the number.

Seems a fair few companies are rolling this metric into training these days.  I'll be very interested to see how this plays out with the Watch in comparison to a singular daily reading through a validated method, such as HRV4training.

I'll be even more interested to whether it correlates with the whoop, which interestingly, follows the same monthly trends as HRV4TRAINING.

Hmmm.... Hopefully, (fingers crossed) money to be saved! Fingers crossed
