945 Elevation Change is Inaccurate

When using my FR945 for cycling the total elevation is usually off by 30% or more when compared to other devices on the same ride or Strava. The 945 recorded my latest ride at 2500ft while Strava records it at 3300ft.  I am guessing this is due to the watches inability to detect quick changes in elevation (fast downhill and immediate uphill). The elevation change while running seems to be a little more accurate and that would make sense since the response to changes would not have to be as quick.  I don't care about accurate starting and finishing elevations since that is affected by barometric pressure.  I do expect the watch to accurately recording elevation changes.  Is anybody getting good results recording elevation change with their FR or FENIX?

  • I have your feelings too, 945 is not bad in running or walking, understimating on MTB… I come from 935, that seemed the opposite, too much sensitive, good ln Mtb track, but accumulating too many errors on walking….

I compare it not with strava but with friends with Garmin 530 or 1030. Understimating more or less by 10/15%.....

    Sorry for my english….

It's horrible for running. I have 2 945's Both way off every run by 300 ft or more. Thats huge difference  in running. Garmin refuses to acknowledge the issue with lies even after filing a claim with BBB

What issue?  There are two 945's in my household and they both work perfectly.  How about some more info.  Are they off by 300' at the start of your run, for the duration, or towards the end?

  • My 945 seems to do well with elevation changes when running, but cycling is another story. When I run the same route, values are consistent. Also, I have tried some elevation corrections on Garmin Connect and the correction typical adds or subtracts only 1 or 2%.. But when cycling elevation runs way high... I am 10 to 30% over everything else, including riding partners, my 2nd hand Edge 520 and Garmin Connect elevation corrections.

To me this is unacceptable for such an expensive watch marketed as a multi sport watch. If it was just a runners model like the 245, maybe it could be forgiven. I just don't know why it can not perform like the old Edge computer I am using
