Audio alerts in earbuds function only when playing music: bug or by design?

Firmware 3.08 beta, "audio prompts" (lap alert, pace alert, heart rate alert) set to ON and alert frequency 1 minute.

In easy run I like to hear music and, if I'm playing music, I can hear audio prompts.

During hard workouts I prefer to not listen to music, but as soon as I pause the music after the warmup, I can't hear audio prompts in the earbuds any more. If I resume the music, I can hear all the audio prompts alerts that I missed (for example, for about 30 seconds the watch says  "Current lap 5 min/km, current pace 4:55 min/km, current heart rate 150, current pace 4:50.." and so on.)

Today I tried to connect the earbuds without starting the music, but if I don't push the "play music" button, I can't hear audio prompts.

There is a way to listen to audio prompts alerts without music? Is this a bug (in this case I will write to "[email protected]") or is this by design (in this case I will write to "Garmin.ideas")?

  • "[email protected]") or is this by design (in this case I will write to "Garmin.ideas")?

I don't have an answer for you, but are those legit e-mail addresses, or just tongue in cheek?

  • 1- "[email protected]" is correct and can send mail only user that have the beta firmware installed in their watch

2- for the second, the correct name is https://www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/ and everyone can send suggestions. I don't know if Garmin then reads them Slight smile

  • Thank you .. much appreciated.

  • Today 18 october I did another run and this time I couldn't replicate the issue. I was listening to music and I could hear the "audio prompts" every minute. Then I pressed the pause button and the music stopped, but I continued to have audio alerts.

I don't know what caused the problem the other day, it's possible that it's not a problem of the watch but a problem of the earbuds Jaybird Vista.

  • What seems to happen to me, with Trekz Air headphones, is that if I stop the music then the BT connection seems to timeout and even if I restart music I hear nothing until I turn off the headphones and on again and force the watch to reconnect. Never have this issue with my Android phone playing and pausing to the same headset.

  • Today another run and I had the same issue again. I was running with only one earbud, the right. If I recall correctly, I always have this problem when I run with only one earbud. When I run with both earbuds, I can hear audio prompts also after pausing the music. In theory the earbuds Jaybird Vista should work correctly even if I wear only one earbud.

  • I did some test and this is what I discovered with the headphones Jbird Vista.

If I have both earbuds on, I first connect the headphones to the watch beginning to play the music. If I pause the music, and I start a running activity, I always hear audio alerts even if the music is paused.

If I have only one earbud, usually as soon as I pause the music, the audio alerts stop with the music. If I want to run only with one earbud and I don't want to listen to music but I want to listen to audio alerts, a solution, not very elegant indeed, is this:

    1- wear both the earbud

2- connect the headphones to the watch beginning to play the music

    3- pause the music

4- the audio alerts remain in both earbuds. Now if I shut down only one earbud,  I can listen to the audio alerts with the other earbud even if the music was stopped.

I tried multiple time and this seems to function always and in a consistent way.

Firmware beta 3.15 and headphones Jbird Vista updated with the latest firmware as 2 November 2019.

is that if I stop the music then the BT connection seems to timeout and even if I restart music I hear nothing until I turn off the headphones and on again and force the watch to reconnect

This happen with the Jaybird Vista also but only rarely  and not in a consistent way.

  • Thank you very much for the instruction.  Searching already a long time how to play audio prompts without music.  Great!
