Run FTP vs Cycling FTP

I run with the Garmin HRM Run and the IQ field run power. My running power is very different than my cycling power. Is there anywhere to set a Run FTP value that only applies to run activities?

I can only find one place on the watch or in Garmin Connect where I can set the FTP. I have it set to my cycling FTP value. Whenever I do a run with Power, the FTP value is included in the fit file. When this get sync'd with Today's Plan it creates and FTP mismatch error as I have my Run FTP set in Today's Plan which does not match what gets uploaded in the fit file.

I would like to see a separate setting for run FTP and if that is not possible, then it would be best if the cycling FTP value was not included in run activity fit files.

  • Garmin's running power algorithm includes elastic rebound, which leads to much higher power numbers than similar RPE efforts cycling. It also results in a higher power number than the same run with Stryd. I don't want to call it wrong, because the science is far from settled on this issue.

But these higher running power numbers can lead to inconsistent results when exported to 3rd party services. In my case, I found it messed with results on Golden Cheetah.

In the end I removed the IQ Running Power datafield.

vdot64, I totally agree with you. My running FTP is about 340 watts and my biking FTP is about 200-210 watts. When I bike, the FTP for the workout shows 345 and since I pulled perhaps 165 watts (easy recovery ride) the TSS assigned is much too low (like 18 in Garmin vs. 53 in Training Peaks, which handles different FTP settings for biking vs. running).

  • It's fairly annoying that one cannot have separate FTP zones for different activities.  I use Stryd and like other posters here have very different FTP for running versus cycling.  It's why when I run I end up just relying on Stryd's zones and I set Garmin's single Power Zone FTP to my cycling settings.  There's no happy work around here.

  • sure, you are right, you have to use third party things like Training Peaks, their you can configure Zones for everything!

Hope Garmin looks on the new Coros Pace 2 watch! Stuck out tongue winking eye

  • My FTP for cycling is 229 Watt. for running my avg running power was calculated about 231 watt where the max power was 317 watt at that run.

So both are about the same.
