My 945 has frozen a few times during runs

on a few occasions my 945 has frozen and can only be revived with a reset by holding the on/off button for 15 seconds.

when it starts up and i select to do a run, once it resumed with nothing lost, another time it lost all data for the run, and another time it resumed, but recording nothing else on the gps track but did record total distance and time

on my run i use extra data fields: Dozen Run, and Rolling Average Pace

has anyone had this issue? is it a known bug? is there a solution i can do, or one coming?

  • Do you use a watch face that you downloaded from CIQ?

  • Yes, using terminus, but obviously it's not displayed while running...

  • It doesn't have to be displayed while running to cause problems.  It just needs to be installed on the device.  Try uninstalling it and applying a stock watch face for awhile and see if it happens again.  This has always solved this problem for me.  Worth a try.  Even Garmin recommends not installing third party CIQ watch faces because they are known to cause problems.

  • Ok thanks, will try it. Seems odd that garmin would go a long way out of their way to provide the means to have custom watch faces then recommend not to use it :/

  • Also, the issue only occurs randomly not regularly, so won't really know it has been solved if I don't know how to make this issue happen in the first place

  • Yes, it's very random.  Maybe it's not the watch face, but it doesn't happen anymore since I stopped using them.  I've had more than one rep from Garmin tell me that if you experience any unexplained weirdness like this the first thing they'll tell you to do is uninstall any CIQ stuff to see if that fixes it.  Not that everything you get from CIQ is bad, it's not, but if it's not one from Garmin they tell you to try uninstalling.  Good luck!

  • Hi,

It happened to me today for the first time while riding MTB.

Screen was frozen but in the background data was recording.

I restarted the watch once I noticed that and it resumed compeletly.

I'm with Beta 3.08 of hte firmware, which firmware version do you use?

  • And do you have a CIQ watch face installed?

  • Yes, I do. And I saw thisthis suggestion above.

Yet this watch face wasn't installed or updated in the recent days (and doesn't have an update) and I did several rides in the last 7 days w/o this phenomena.

The only change is the new beta firmware I've installed yesterday.

  • I've seen this as well.  lindajm22 is almost certainly correct as removing CIQ watch faces seems to fix the issue.  Suggesting the fix is to remove CIQ watch faces definitely doesn't seem like the solution, at least not in the long run.  If you run into this, you should contact Garmin support and reference to this thread to make sure they realize it isn't just you.  Just posting here isn't enough to get their attention.

It doesn't even seem to require that your current watch face is CIQ.  I've seen it just having a CIQ watch face on the device even when a native WF is set as my current one.  I've added debug messages to my own CIQ watch face and see that the background process of a CIQ watch face can be loaded even when it's not your selected WF.
