Virtual partner not working - I'm almost always ahead (shouldn't be :)

I always seem to be ahead of my virtual partner, even when I should be clearly behind.

For instance if I set my pace to 9:45 mi/min for a recovery run, and let's say I run 10:30, and the average pace on the VP screen shows me much slower than 9:45 mi/min, it will still show me as ahead. How can that be?

I'm using this as part of my workout, so I'm running a workout I've set up previously.

Tips/suggestions for getting this to work? I'm running Berlin next week and it would be nice to have this give me some additional indication as to where I am in terms of pace. I plan to run the marathon in workout mode since I've been training all summer with it, and am comfortable with the data screens/sequence/setup.

  • Although I bought a 945 it was for my wife so I can’t directly help you.  If you are willing to go another route take a look at the CIQ data fields by peterdedecker.  I use his “Peter’s (race) pacer data field”.   Main bonus with it is it allows you to correct the distance at split markers so the estimated time to fi ish is more accurate.  You should also have the new smarter pace capably available with the 945 as well but can’t speak to how well it works (unless that is what you are using and having issues with)

  • Ah .. thanks for the pointer to that data field, I'll take a look.

My main issue is with the built-in Garmin Virtual data field .. but perhaps a data field like the one you suggest can help make up for it.

I assume you did set a pace for the VP as well?

  • Yes, in the data screen there was a way to edit the time, so I set it up for 9:45 pace.

I found another post that suggested:

    1. remove VP screen from workout
    2. reset the watch
    3. add the VP again

I tried this .. and that seems to have fixed it (at least today during my 12 miler) - however, the VP still resets every mile (I like my autolap at 1 mile).

I wish there was a way to work cumulatively for a whole activity, like my workout, rather than reset every lap.

u should give that feedback suggestion to garmin support. how did you get ur VP to work my time ahead is stuck at 0:00 ahead and doesnt move and how do you tell which person is you? they both identical is there a different color for the person and the person on the watch you are racing against???

  • You are the red person. The gray one is the virtual partner. See the attached image from Levon above.

There are some issues with the virtual partner when you are running courses.

    1. It will always use the preset pace of the course and can't be changed. If you haven't set a pace for the course you will still get one. I don't yet know where the setting for that is. My default pace will always be 5:00 if I don't set any for the course.

    2. If you do the course in reverse the virtual partner will not work at all. It will be stuck at 0:00.

If you aren't running a course the virtual partner works as intended and you can set the pace as you wish.

  • Did some experimenting with the virtual partner in combination with routes recently: The issue is that whenever the watch detects to for you to be "Off-Course", which happens occasionally even when you don't actually leave the course in my Alpine runs, it will reset the Virtual-Partner (and the gray arrow on the Map) back to your position once you are back on route. Basically this makes the virtual partner pretty useless for me, I found more success using pacepro.
