Bug: heart rate going off the chart after finishing a workout and taking off my HRM-TRI

I usually work out with a HRM-TRI connected to my FR945 with software 2.80.

What I've noticed is that often when I'm done working out (running or cycling) and take off my HRM-TRI the watch suddenly shows an insanely high OHR (like above 240 when my max workout HR is only 170 or so). It stays like this until I reboot my watch.

I've done a hard reset already but that didn't help, today I again had a 245 OHR after spinning.

  • I had this issue with my Fenix5+ and HRM-RUN as well.

Turned out it’s not an issue with the OHR, but instead that the HRM-RUN was still transmitting after I ended the workout and took it off. If you then open the HR widget the watch will look for external sensors again, and then switch from the OHR to the «false» HRM signal.

Take a look under your watch when you see these extreme values, and I’m quite sure you’ll find that the green LEDs are turned off.

  • Ah that's interesting to know. Thanks! But how do I solve this?

For some reason the ant+ devices keep reconnecting after the workout is done anyway which is really unnecessary. They should just disconnect.

  • You could turn off the external sensor in the sensor settings on the watch, but that’s kind of troublesome as you would have to manually enable it again the next time you want to use it.

I’ve found that this isn’t a problem if I stay out of the HR widget (or any kind of activity mode) until I’m sure the sensor has switched off and stopped transmitting. Be aware that the sensor might be kept «alive» for some time if it’s moist and there’s movement involved. (I.e in you bag while travelling home from the gym)

Also, a quick peek at the OHR LEDs will reveal which sensor is active. As long as their on you’re okay.

  • There are a number of threads discussing this. Have a search and you'll find a number of different solutions, one of which might solve your problem.

  • Thanks! I did try searching, however on "HRM", "HRM-TRI" or "heart rate" I couldn't find anything relevant. I'd love a solution for this because it breaks my daily overview and averages as well.

  • I'd love a solution for this

I don't know what kind of solution you are hoping for, but apparently this behavior is by (poor..?) design and has "always" been like this, so I wouldn't expect Garmin to change it any time soon.

The real problem here is the HRM that picks up a false signal when it's not being worn and keeps transmitting it instead of shutting down.

As said: the "safest" workaround is to disable the sensor in the watch settings after ending your workout, while the easiest workaround is to avoid triggering a new sensor search (i.e. stay out of the HR widget) until you're sure the sensor has shut down.

  • Thanks for that!

I'll  just have to live with it then. Never had this issue on my Fenix 3hr before, not the high heart rate nor it connecting after a workout. That's why I wondered why it does this on my forerunner.

  • I have the same issue. I noticed that the band "dies" after about 30 minutes I removed it and dried it. In the meantime I take these precautions: I move it more than 10 meters from the clock and leave it lying on a towel.

Another solution would be to use a hammer, with a bang ...
