Torn between 945 and Fenix 6 (upgrading from 735xt)

I asked this same question in the Fenix 6 area but wanted both sides

Here we go...

I'm looking to upgrade from my trusty 735xt.  90% of my activity is running based.

The 945 was a shoe-in as the natural choice, but now that the Fenix 6 is out, I'm a bit conflicted.

For the Pro Fenix 6, I love how the screen takes up more of the real estate of the watch (i.e. smaller bezel).  That and how it generally looks a little bit classier (although I'm not hung up about this particularly).

However, the increased weight is my only concern.  Are there any mostly runners here that have switched to the Fenix from a Forerunner?  How did you find the increased weight, both in running and day to day wear?

And, of course, those who switched from the Fenix to the 945....

Thanks!

  • I switched from a Fenix to the fr945. Even though I liked the Fenix a lot and it looks nice, it got more and more in the way. It felt as if the more I started working out the less it suited me, especially when swimming and on really long runs it became very noticably present. Also wearing it when sleeping was uncomfortable for me.

The 945 on the other hand is hardly noticable when working out and fine to sleep with. It does everything the Fenix does so I'm perfectly fine with it. It did feel a little more flimsy when I first switched coming from the tank Fenix but I'm perfectly happy with my fr945. The only downside I've noticed is that my Fenix' battery seemed to last longer, but that might also come from using the music now.

  • i am totally happy with the FR945, switched from Fenix 5 (big GPS problems all the the time for pacing), the weight isn't really important for me, more the price-performance ratio and it looks like that FR945 get everything of the features of the watches released later.

if Fenix 6, then i think only the solar version and of course the bigger display because i am wearing glasses

  • I initially chose 735XT over Fenix due to size and weight and was never disappointed, especially during workouts.

This year made a transition to 945 and I am very happy with it, it is slightly larger but still very light and very durable.

With my rather small wrists any Fenix is just big, thick and heavy (double the weight of 735XT or 945).

If you are like me and still decide on Fenix, make sure to try it before buying.

My impression is also that people who seriously do sports go for 945 (tri line) and those that have such a watch for casual/sporty looks and occasional sports go with Fenix. Maybe this is just my impression from a limited sample of my friends.

    Why not the 6s?

  • I had a Fenix3 and I just bought a 945. I think that undoubtedly, fenix line is more visually appealing than forerunners. However, I'm really happy with my new 945 performance and functions (WHR and maps are awesome) and everything  fits in  a watch so light that sometimes I don't even notice I'm wearing it. My fenix 3 had a metal strap, so the difference in weight is quite big. I think you can't go wrong with any of these watches, it's up to you: lighter (945) or heavier but better visually (Fenix line).

  • I had a Fenix 3hr, now a 945. The weight / size of the Fenix never bothered me. I only couldn't stand it while sleeping. I mostly use them for running, but I wear the watch all day. Switched to the 945 since it had a few newer things than the 5 plus.

The fenix 6 is looking great, probably would get that if I would buy a watch now. Mainly because I like the look better. Other than that I'm not going to replace my 945. The fenix 6 is not really a big upgrade for that.

Either way, I think both watches are great :-)

  • I changed from F3 to 935 and then 945.

Fenix was too big for my small wrists and I am much more happy with the looks of the 9x5.

Apart from that: always thought that the Forerunners have better GPS reception than the Fenix models have.

  • Bit hard to say never having put an F6 on my wrist but I have a 735 and now use 945 as my main watch. If you like the 735 for lightness then the 945 is going to be a little bigger (but I don't really notice) and the F6 bit more besides.

So many variants of the F6 too. Need a few hours studying it all whereas a 945 is well just a 945 and will do pretty much everything any F6 does (and a lot more than some F6s it seems) especially as things like PacePro are coming soon apparently.

  • Something that really annoyed me about the Fenix 5s plus was the metal bezel but plastic case. Could be because I switched from a chronos which was metal all over. The other thing that annoyed me was no quick release kit for triathlon. The 945 is perfect I’m not annoyed by the plastic because the whole thing is plastic and the quick release kit from my old 935 works with the 945. The 945 can be fitted with any Fenix 5 band too so you can make it look styling enough. I went from having a 5s plus and 935 to just the 945 after I saw that the Fenix 6 was no big upgrade and looks crap compared to the Marq...
