Hi,

CJOttawa, "*especially* if you're using trekking poles." - So true! Just finished a trail marathon this past weekend (using poles) and OHR was way off considering the effort (not that I really…
Yep, "High Heart-Rate Variability" correlates with "Low HRV stress."
The way I think of it is:
Today a short and easy hike around a lake. I had nothing in my hands (no trekking poles).
From Minute 56 – 1:09 the OHR got crazy and was 20-30bpm too high!
I coudn't identify any reason for the behavior. But I saw such behavior also in the past. Especially with outdoor cycling.
The increase in heart rate of the chest belt towards the end was a short run to have similar maximum values for scaling the Y-Axis.
→ One more example to confirm: wrist OHR is not 100% correct! Even in the case of this simple and constant load.
Today was a 9-1/2 miles of hills. Used the Hiking activity and had both the OHR and Tri showing most of the time on my watch face.
I'll have to keep wearing the strap because the OHR fails when it misses the quick up heart beat when first taking on a major elevation climb. Every time it failed. I was hoping for better results. Actual 174 and OHR showing 122, 161/102, 134/85,162/102. Once both were in the 130's tracking really close and I thought now it's working and going to go up when I hit the next hill climb. NOT.
I'll start wearing a strap for my future hikes now.
I noticed exactly the same problem - the heartrate recorded by OHR on my Instinct is stuck around 110 BPM.
This happens regardless of me using the hiking poles or not.
Here's a screenshot showing HR and elevation (green line):
As you can see from the image the HR remains constant even during steep climbs. This recording was done without using the hiking poles.
I bought this watch so I could stop using BT chest strap + Strava phone app. I really don't like the strap.
