Two Sapphire Fenix 6 Pro’s, backlight / contrast issues

I bought two fenix 6’s today, both are the Carbon grey DLC coated with sapphire glass.

Have a look at these photos, my wife's is on the left hand side and mine the right. Her looks very yellow compared to mine which looks far crisper and sharper. Both have backlight set to 50%.

Any thoughts on if there’s a setting other than backlight that could cause this before I go back to the shop where I bought them?

Thanks. I'm a stubborn old dude, but I did learn humility way back in my army days, so not ashamed to admit when I'm wrong about something...lol

  • I have found something interesting. Many e-shops in the Czech Republice have two items for seemingly the same Garmin 6S Sapphire Grey. Some of them have one of them delisted, some offer those two for a different price. For example Datart:

What's the difference, except ~ 10 % of the price? Is it related to the dirrefence in screen? Maybe. Let's Google those two part numbers:

Anyway, although not officially confirmed, there might be a difference in screens between those two. Does anybody have any evidence that supports or rejects it?

Even at 100% backlight it should not be blue. I tried mine at 100% backlight and it still has a black not blue background. I heard there is a difference between the saphire and Gorilla glass, maybe confirm that those with the blue background are Saphire glass.

I have a gorilla glass 6 Pro and mine is atrociously blue with low contrast.

  • So, I have bought Fenix 6S Sapphire 010-02159-25 in Czech Republic from Datart. There is a comparison with non-sapphire Fenix 5S.

(None of them have a screen protector, which is a bit unfair, but using a screen protector would be an extra variable affecting the results.)

    Conclusion:

    • The colours are very similar.
    • 6S Sapphire is slightly darker and white is slightly yellowish. It might be related to sapphire rather than a different screen quality.
    • Viewing angle is slightly better for 6S Sapphire.
    • From the comparison with 5S, I would guess that I have the good one.
    • Comparison with OP's photos is a bit harder, as we have probably different cameras with different settings and different environment. My environment (virtually dark except the backlight) highlights the backlight. On the first OP's image, my watch are much closer to the good one. On the second image, they are probably closer to the bad one, but it is due to the light. We cannot expect AMOLED-grade black from this technology. (And it is OK, transflective LCDs has different pros.)
  • Viewing angle is slightly better for 6S Sapphire.

Just finished in a chat with customer services about this. I have a Fenix 6X with the blueish tint. Their take on it is that all of the watches are excellent. Some have the blueish tint and some don’t. I explained that in terms of quality assurance, the products should be the same. Or, offer customers two variations....a black, or blueish tint. It’s not considered a default and they will not replace it because you could just end up with another tinted one. Not very helpful. I have got used to the tint on mine but having seen your post, it has bothered me again. How can a company sell a premium product with such differences in quality? Crazy.

  • Sorry to hear man. Have you contacted Garmin to arrange a return or exchange? Also do you know the first 5 digits of the serial number?

  • After two months "fighting" with Garmin, last week I receive a replace of my blueish tint Fenix 6 sapphire. Lock at the differences Old one. 63N00...New one. 63N17...

    Jesus C.

    Like night and day!!

    So pleased for you.

I ended up sending my 2nd back due to mushy buttons.

Have ordered another (6x pro instead of sapphire as the difference in clarity is unbelievable). But also ordered a Suunto 9 to compare.

Problem is if you look online Suuntos also have their issues.

    You cant will.

I even explored a wrist holder for my phone (primarily use navigation for running routes) but impractical.
