Forerunner 945: After over night charge, No Controls Menu access, unable to power down, GPS obtained for activity but start button will not start the activity

Coming from 3 different Fenix models, I have been generally unimpressed by the 945. I have lost significant time getting it to work with Express, trying to get Bluetooth to work with my headphones, GPS signal acquisition and especially reconfiguring all of my data screens after a hard reset to try and resolve some of these matters.

This morning, after charging my 945 (firmware v2.7) for my planned trail run I have the following issues:

  • Garmin Express will not detect the watch (played with Device Manager, deleted device from Express, etc.) No luck. Express has been flakey with the 945 since day 1.
  • No access to the Controls Menu - holding the Light button down for 5-10 seconds brings up a notice telling me to use Garmin Mobile to configure assistance.
  • No ability to power the watch off. I can access some menus, which allowed me to see all of the default hot keys and combos that allow for powering down. None of these work.
  • I can open an activity with the Start button and obtain GPS BUT the Start button will not start the activity.
  • I am sure there are more issues I am unaware of...

The only positive is that my head phones connected quicker than they ever have before after selecting my Spotify playlist.

I'm reluctant to try a Reset since I have 7+ Activities and their data screens dialed in.

Currently, streaming music to kill the battery and see what happens. And as I type, the battery just died after 5.5 hours of streaming (without GPS mode).

Update to come...

  • what happens if you hold the light button longer than the 5-10 seconds you stated? Ignore the notice and push longer. Normaly the watch will power down.

  • Great question. And thank you for the quick reply. 1 minute was the longest I held the Light button down without any success or change to the Garmin Assistance Setup message.

However, letting the battery empty itself through streaming has me connected to Express, updated to v2.8 and all issues mentioned in the OP, resolved.

I'm still concerned about this happening on race day... but will continue to give the 945 a fair shake despite my gripes.

In the 945s defense, my buddy has not had any of the flakiness I have dealt with.
