Recovery adviser with Zwift

Hi,

I’m curious to know how Garmin logs/centralizes our effort data.

I recently acquired the FR945, and plan to use it for all my activities (replacing also my Edge 830 on my bike),

Does Garmin centralize all activity/effort data (from the FR946, Edge 830, and Zwift), and ‘push’ it to the FR945.

If it does (as I would hope it does), then I would use my FR945 for running/treadmill, the Edge for cycling, and Zwift for home training on the bike.

If it doesn’t, then I’ll use the FR945 for running/treadmill, cycling and Zwift home training. Then remove my duplicate Garmin/Zwift activity from my Strava and TraingPeaks accounts.

Thanks for your answers!

  • All training status calculations are being performed only on devices with a Firstbeat licence. So uploading a Zwift activity does not affect your training status or VO2max.

Workaround: record the Zwift ride in parallel with your Garmin device and delete the duplicate afterwards. I do delete the Garmin recorded duplicate as I am interested in the recorded Zwift courses and distances.

  • Thanks fischest,

You pretty much confirmed what I suspected would be the case. I’ll do the parallel recording, and since the Firstbeat data isn’t pushed to the watch, I’ll keep my Zwift activity on Garmin Connect instead of the Garmin activity.

I'm a little bit confused, I had almost the exact same question.

I'm interested in tracking the Training Load Focus stats across devices. I understand the workaround to run a 945/530 at the same time as Zwift (on an ipad in my case) - but is the data from the 945 not needed to calculate the "load"?

Does this mean that you can only see the Load on the 945 & 530 and not on the app because but the phone isn't licensed to do so?

Apologies if I haven't explained my question too well - seems crazy to need to record an activity twice when you know you'll just be deleting it later on...

  • Well, in a perfect world, Garmin would buy a better license and do the calculation on the platform also.

But it is like it is: record the duplicate, the watch/Edge does the calculation and will update the training stats. The activity itself is then not needed anymore.

  • Yes, it’s a shame it’s not a perfect world. My original message I put a typo — I have the Edge 820, and not the Edge 830. I was thinking of getting the Edge 830, but since the performance effort stats are on a per device basis, I’ll just use my FR945 for biking, and if I really want to look at it while cycling, i’ll use a HRM and adapter to mount the watch.

  • I also have an Edge 820 and use it for outdoor cycling. With Physio TrueUp the metrics are being propagated to the 945. Works ok.

  • Do you have any instructions / guide for the workaround, please?

I ask as I injured myself last week, and now have a nasty calf tear through overtraining. If I had relative effort imported from Zwift (or using a workaround) to ensure that effort is recorded properly on my Forerunner 245, training load & recovery would save me from myself!

All help gratefully received! Head bandage

  • As long as you are recording your heart rate for the indoor biking activity on your Garmin watch, you will get the Garmin intensity metrics. I don’t know the 245’s capabilities, but the 945 can also record watts from your trainer while on Zwift. However, I think heart rate is the key. I’ve been using Peleton because my trainer broke, and the workloads seem right even though they only reflect heart rate.
