More detailed Vo2Max?

Now even though I know I should not read too much in Vo2Max, I do think it's a fun stat and therefore me and a friend of mine have begun a vo2max battle. Who ever has the highest vo2max at a certain date, wins. Now we are pretty evenly matched and the watch only shows Vo2Max in whole numbers (e.g. 55). Is there any way to get it in more detail (e.g. 55,2 or even 55,24) either on the phone itself or through an app in the IQ store? I searched, but could not find it. Thanks in advance!

  • I sync my activities to Runalyze. There I can see the values with two fraction digits.

  • Thanks. I did that and now I can see my Vo2Max value per run. What I see is that the values of my runs this week (3) are much higher (average 58,67), than the value I get on my watch (53). Is that because Garmin calculates Vo2max cumulatively over a longer period? If so, anybody knows what the period is?

  • Runalyze is doing it's own calculation from your recorded data. The value you see there is not based on the internal FirstBeat calculations within your 945. I also got those calculations when uploading from my Suunto 9 for example (that's the reason why I used Runalyze earlier this year because as you probably know, Suunto is currently killing themselves by turning off Movescount and not having a proper web-platform anymore)

I hope this comes up in English for you:

    https://runalyze.com/help/article/vo2max

So as long as both of you use Runalyze it probably wouldn't matter. They also show a kind of a summary/trending VO2max which makes more sense when seen long-term.

  • True but Runalyze can also display the value from a Garmin FIT file.

Just check for the data table:  "VO2max (by file)"

Then the moving average from your Garmin will be displayed side by side with the Runalyze value for the run. Also you get in the overview the moving average that Runalyze calculates and the averages per week and month and year.

  • Awesome! Thank you very much!

  • Love to help. But beware a little of the values. The behavior was odd in the past and I think, Garmin has sorted this out with the 945 now but I am not 100% sure as my main metric is Runalyze.

In the past, the VO2max value in the FIT file was the value *before* the run and not afterwards. Noticed this when I did treadmill runs that did not update the VO2max, a behavior which I think has also changed. This meant that you could do some treadmill runs and on the subsequent outdoor run you had the value of the last outdoor run which could be very old. But as written: I think now it is the current moving average. Got to observe.

  • Ah, and one additional thing: the value in Runalyze is called „Effective VO2max“ and was something similar to Jack Daniel‘s VDOT. They had to rename and change for legal issues. VDOT is in general lower than VO2max.

  • The value is definitely the current moving average. After my last run, vo2max went from 52 to 53 and the vo2max by file value is 52,60 (which would be rounded up to 53). Before the run, the vo2max value of the previous run was 52,19 (rounded down to 52)

  • Thanks for the information. So Garmin changed the algorithm which was stupid IMHO.
