Multisport (Swimrun) missing ability to "Download Heart Rate" (plus small rant about 945 hr+swim gps)

Hi,

What's up with that? In run I can see "Download Heart Rate", in that Multisport (Swimrun) I can't., not even on the individual sports :(

As my 945 didn't pair with HRM-Tri and even manually tried to find it during the activity as I noticed that the HR is BS and figured out it's optical HR.
No luck. It was in need of a reboot but didn't want to do that during the sport and hey I can always download it later, apparently Garmin says NO YOU CAN'T.

https://connect.garmin.com/modern/activity/4008914634/18

Is this some known missing feature or issue or what?

Starting new activity screen should have better indicators that where's the HR coming from, would help notice that oh, this 945 need reboot,
and this with ANT+. I've never had these HR connectivity issues with Garmin watches before 945 :(

And new GPS and 945 firmware, 4 swims out of 9 failed :( Maybe Garmin should use components from manufacturer that is proven to work.
Sony apparently doesn't. Don't know what is the ANT+/BT chip in this versus older ones, but it's also crap, or some other issue with this needing reboot to get ANT+ connection to work.

Are you referring to starting a new activity in a multi-sport workout or any new activity?

  • Both. If you select the sport before making sure the sensor thing, it doesn't matter is it multisport or some other single sport.

If you have selected the sport you only have the data screens and then you get notifications, which you don't really watch as you are getting ready to go...

And in the starting screen black hr.. blinking, that's not the best either.

I think if the sport hasn't been started, you should stay on the starting screen and the starting screen should have good and clear indications about those things.

Or is that big starting screen some thing if the sport is favourite? As I only have one favourite, ah if you have two favourites you don't even have that screen. Uhoh :D

Prior to starting an activity, I get the solid Heart icon displayed telling me an external HR monitor is connected on the top half of the data screen in addition to the brief msg notification.  If it doesn't show, I know it's still using the oHRM.  Are you not getting this?  The problem I find is if that monitor, or any sensor drops for any reason, I have no way of knowing and I'm not alerted unless that sensor reconnects and I get the msg notification on my watch again.

  • If I press start, I get solid black heart there. If I go and connect external HR the notification comes and the solid black heart blinks ONCE, if I then come away from the HR the black heart starts to blink.

So what is the logic in this? I don't get it.

And this screen is only if you have only one favourite sport. Try adding two and the screen is gone. And I don't usually look at this screen as how it works is totally not clear and if I select something from not my favourites it goes to data screens.

Ok if then in data screens I press up there's the symbols, this time white heart.. Let's go and find the HR again. Notification comes, hides the white heart. White heart is solid as it was before. Nothing changed. If I then move away from the HR it also starts to blink.

So I do find this really crappy. And if it isn't supposed to work like this, then wtf?

  • Have you disabled the optical? Could that explain the difference?

Just for clarity, when you say solid black heart, are you referring to the data screen displaying your HR?

  • If I disable the optical then the heart is blinking when I press start.

So I can't see the heart symbol making any difference is the HR from optical or external.

So apparently blinking means searching, static means I got HR, but no way of knowing which HR.

  • When I say solid black heart I'm referring the screen that comes when I press start once, when I only have one favourite activity.

That screen doesn't exist if you have more favourite activities.

Which screen are you talking about?

I have several activities set as favorites and have never used just one.  As i sit here typing this I'm selecting the "run" activity.  Before actually starting the activity, I have a flashing icon for my foot pod and tempe sensor on the top half of my screen and they go solid once connected.  Because my chest strap isn't in range, I'll never get a flashing heart so I know it's using the oHRM.  I just put my chest strap on and it started flashing because it detects the strap and it went solid once connected.  As long as I have a good GPS fix, I can start my run.  If I understand you correctly, you don't have this option when only one activity is set as a favorite?

  • I just realize that I can select the sport, press up, to get those visible to the top 1/3 or something.

But if I'm wearing the HR, it's solid as it's using optical, and then as HR has been connected it's solid again. If I won't watch what notifications is telling me, I can't later glance that is everything OK and let's go, which is the problem, it's bad design.

I would need to be looking at the watch to see those, which is really, really? I think status symbols should be indicative and you don't need to be looking what notifications it has given, was it gps ok, or external hr connected or what, or counting them as they might be pretty close together.

Or I will need to go to the settings, sensors, look at the sensor there what is it's status, this is pain.
