"Transfer in Progress"

So my 945 took over 4 hours to transfer a 1 hour and 30 minute run yesterday.  It wasn't until I got home and A) turned on Wifi upload and B) connected to the Wifi that it finally uploaded the activity.

This is a regular occurrence for my device unfortunately, this "transfer in progress" that takes multiple hours for syncing activities that take less time to run!

I've tried disconnecting, rebooting, etc.  Nothing seems to work.  The same activities recorded on a much older device (Vivoactive) take mere minutes.

This time I *think* it had something to do with trying to download a course from Garmin Connect Mobile prior to going on the run.  After waiting 15min for the course to upload, I finally gave up and just winged it on the route.  I suppose it is possible that this "course" gummed up the works but because there is no message other than "transfer in progress" on the device, there is no way to know for sure.

It would be nice if you could see what is in fact being transferred and could cancel it if it something causing an issue.  I don't really know what else I can try with this device when this happens.

I found out that if my Bluetooth was connected, the watch was trying to establish a link thru my phone (I almost always have my data turned off) via Connect, even tho I had selected WiFi and would never complete a sync.

If you have Bluetooth enabled, try turning it off and then select "Sync" via the circle menu and see if that works...

  • I have the same, transfer took several minutes, nothing happened, so I enabled data on mobile phone and immediately after that, sync was done. So is the internet connection neccessary ?

Internet via Garmin Connect, Garmin Express or the 945's WiFi...

The data has to make it up to the website somehow...

  • I'll try to answer some of the comments/replies in this reply.

I am almost certain you need to be connected to data on your phone (either via cellular network or over wifi) in order for the watch to connect to Garmin Connect Mobile through Bluetooth.  Why this is I don't know, you'd think if it was just connecting via BT that it wouldn't need the phone to be subsequently connected to data/the-internet as well.

That isn't the issue for me.  I am connected to data on my phone constantly, and certainly was when these long "transfer in progress" instances occur.  My problem is that it takes HOURS sometimes for short little 30-90 minute activities to finally upload.  And there is no option to check progress.

  • This won't help with your original question, but I will address the need for the phone to be connect to the internet through some means while sync'ing.

The activity data from the watch is not sync'ing to your phone so much as it is sync'ing through your phone to the cloud-based Garmin Connect platform.  Without a data connection from the phone to Garmin Connect, there is no way for that sync to complete.  It could be possible for the watch to sync to the phone with no data connection, and then for the phone to buffer that data until such time as it does have a data connection - but I'm pretty certain this is presently not supported as you have shown experimentally.

  • Ok, here's a workaround: delete the app, delete the bluetooth device from your phone AND delete the 945 from connect.garmin.com. Switch off and then on your phone. Install the app again on your phone, start it, and skip config as much as possible.

Now do a factory reset on the 945 (data and settings) in settings/system/reset. After it reboots, skip your watch-config as much as possible

In the app, pair with the watch. If the app does not find the watch itself, check the watch menu and select pair/connect-phone.

Once paired, the watch/phone will try and finish your setup. Eventually it will take your connect profile and data and put that back on the app and watch.
