Creating a course - with way-points for "ETA NEXT" - using Garmin Connect?

've read through related posts and can't quite find a simple answer

This is what I'd like to do:

create a course to run,
with waypoints [e.g. water stop] -
and have my garmin's datafields for "ETA NEXT" to refer to the waypoints that I have created.

The problem I'm seeing

I can create a course easily with Garmin Connect. [I can also import gpx files fine]
I add "Course points" for water.
when i start the run, my data fields for "ETA NEXT" and "ETE NEXT" only refer to the finish point. not the course points I added

I've seen mention of Explore.garmin.com, which allows addition of "way points". But the process looks very convoluted when GarminConnect appears to do exactly what I want [albeit not working]

Any clues? I'm a total newb at the forerunner - bought it this week

From memory, if you create course points in garmin connect (app or web) then this usually works if you import route to device as a GPX file.

when you begin the navigate you dont get the waypoints, GC seems to create a way point for every turn navigation point instead

To avoid the "turn-by-turn" navigation you have to copy in the the fit file to the watch file system, not send to device via GC. Yeah that is sad.

Having been very very frustrated with GC, I gave up and use, plotaroute.com. That does what you need, although takes a little time to work out the interface.
