How to set the activity class IN the watch

Hi,

I have a problem.

I have an activity class of 6.

Yesterday I ran for 30 minutes with a heart rate of over 90% of max HR. I got a training effect of 3,4, recovery time advisor - 24h.

Today I was running 35 minutes with a pulse of about 85% of max HR. I got a training effect of 2,4, recovery time advisor - 25h.

With my old Suunto, 30minutes training + activity class 6 + HR over 90% of max HR = TE 4,5+.

How to set the correct activity class IN the watch?

I don't want the watch to calculate activity class. Last week, according to the watch, I had 13 hours of activity, which is far from true.

If according to this activity the watch calculates my training effect, it will kill me.

10x

P.S. I apologize for my poor English

  • Hi, to my knowledge, you cannot change your Activity Class on your Garmin FR945.

Instead of manually scaling your TE scores and Recovery Time recommendations like you did previously on your Suunto…

  • I'm like 95% sure now, but I was 100% before you said that. ;-) Thanks!

I changed my Activity Class around a while back and it didn't do anything. I asked about it, and was told off-hand that…

  • Hi, to my knowledge, you cannot change your Activity Class on your Garmin FR945.

Instead of manually scaling your TE scores and Recovery Time recommendations like you did previously on your Suunto watch, this personalization step is done automatically behind the scenes based on a combination of your current VO2max and activity history.

There isn't an option to do it manually.

  • My activity class is maximum 6, VO2max is 37 (poor), my weight is 107kg (far from fit).

    35 minutes with a pulse of about 85% of max HR and I got a training effect of 2,4. :D :D :D

Very strange. I feel like I'm hard overreaching (with my 945 on the wrist).

Automatically scaling a TE and Recovery Time doesn't work well for me.

What can be done to calibrate the watch correctly?

  • That is how you can change "Activity Class" - but that Activity Class doesn't impact the personalization of TE and Recovery Time feedback that was asking about. It might have 4-5 years ago, but I'm pretty sure it doesn't anymore. These days's that personalization is done automatically in the background based on your fitness and activity history.

  • This is usually my least favorite advise to give, but I suspect if you continue to use your watch in a normal way for a week or two this will probably sort itself out. I think that Garmin Forerunner devices out of the box probably have a relatively high Activity Class (in the sense that you are familiar with that term and how it works on Suunto watches), but that will sort itself out and dial into what's right for you as you continue to use your watch.

    Good luck!

  • Ah, I see... thanks for clearing that up.

  • No worries, it's super confusing. I think that Activity Class that you can set via Garmin Connect still has something to do with Garmin's Index smart scale products, and it might still have something to do with some of the more basic fitness trackers (I'm not sure).

  • you are totally sure, because you can change the activity class without having a smart scale?

a lot of Garmin smart scale owners have problems with the wrong body fat measurement since over a year or so.

Garmin means, when you change the activity class there, the measurement of the scale is better, but it isn't, instead i got problems with my weekly Training load values when i played arround with the activity class

mean, the optimal range of your Training load will be configured there, but i am not sure and i won't play arround again.

  • I'm like 95% sure now, but I was 100% before you said that. ;-) Thanks!

I changed my Activity Class around a while back and it didn't do anything. I asked about it, and was told off-hand that all the personalization was automated and that the Activity Class you can set in the app wasn't used.

I guess there's always a chance things can change, but I'd be surprised in this case.

    Someone brave should try it.

  • In fact, I waited two weeks before writing in the forum. At first, my workouts seemed normal without thinking about the activity class.

Two weeks later, training will kill me.

I still wear my FR945 but I don't follow its readings and tips.

Everyday 30-40min running with 85-90% HR  is very hard for me today.

With old Suunto I reached VO2max 55ml/min/kg and activity class 8.5 after a few months of intense training. I've always been fresh, never overtrained (10x FirstBeat).

I thought with Garmin 945 my workouts and recovery would be even more accurate. Unfortunately, the automatic selection of an activity class seems to be problematic.
