Missing maps after upgrade to Active Europe 2019.10

My Forerunner 945 came with TopoActive Europe 2018.x maps, which I could see in the device as two maps: North-East and South-West.

After upgrading the maps in Garmin Express to 2019.10, I can only see the 2019.10 North-East maps in the Forerunner. I have tried to reinstall the maps, but nothing changes. Now if I try to do it, I get an error:

I have run out of ideas, what can I do?

Alright, after losing half a day I have solved the problem. I would like to thank Crispin_Ellisdon for referring me to the other post, where it was suggested that Garmin Express for Windows might help…

There’s a post here https://forums.garmin.com/outdoor-recreation/outdoor-recreation/f/fenix-5-plus-series/163077/topoactive-europe-2019-10-released/911807#911807 on the Fenix 5+ forum, also describing missing the SW Europe map. In that case persisting with the reinstall, on a windows pc, seemed to do the trick. The other thing you could try before doing the reinstall, is deleting the cached map file that Express stores on your computer (typically in the App Data folder of your computer), so Express has to re-download the map.

Thank you for your suggestion. Reinstalling the maps on my Mac previously did nothing, now I will try as you suggested, deleting the cached files first.

On Windows I get the error pictured above, maybe because of low disk space on my PC, I will try freeing up some space if reloading the maps on the Mac won’t work.

No luck, after deleting the cached maps and reinstalling them on the Mac I’m still missing the South West maps. How big is the gmapprom.img file on the watch supposed to be? Mine is 3,3 GB.

I’m freeing up space on my PC to try the update using Garmin Express for Windows.

Alright, after losing half a day I have solved the problem. I would like to thank Crispin_Ellisdon for referring me to the other post, where it was suggested that Garmin Express for Windows might help.

After considering the problem might be in the MacOS version of Garmin Express I switched to Windows PCs. For some reason on 2 different PCs Garmin Express failed to update the maps, giving me the error in my original question. On the third PC I had some better luck, on the first try it failed, the reason might be that the PC went into Sleep mode while it was transferring the files, on the second attempt I poked the mouse once in a while, so it didn't enter sleep mode and finally it transferred all the required files. BTW, there are two relevant files, one is roughly 3,3 GB in size (the NE component of the maps) and the other is around 3 GB (the SW component of the maps), the second one is the one that was missing.

So, the solution was: use Garmin Express for Windows as the MacOS version doesn't transfer all the files. Choose "reinstall maps", if you get an error right away after accepting the license, though luck, try another PC. If it starts downloading the maps you have a good chance it will be OK, just don't let your PC enter sleep mode.

Glad to hear that, my experience was very similar:

I only had NE EU maps working and reinstalling maps via GE from mac made no difference, even after clearing GE cache and downloading maps.

Then used GE on windows in a virtual machine and that did the trick. Now even SW EU map shows on the watch.

Ps. Any idea of how to get altitude contour lines?

What I've understood that the TopoActive Europe doesn't contain contours...

If you want them. you need to load OpenStreetMap with contours, but don't know is there just the contours map somewhere if you don't want to full openstreetmaps..

ok, downloaded from here http://garmin.opentopomap.org/

just copied the map and contour .img files to garmin folder and they appear in the map list option of the watch.

quite simple, just surprised garmin doesn't include them :(

Unfortunately, those free contour lines are only 20 meters I think? The 5 meter contour lines incuded in Garmins premium topo maps gives you a much better presentation of the topology, at least on the scale relevant for eg trekking and trailrunning.
