Forerunner 945 discontinuous heart rate

I had Forerunner 935 for 1.5 years with no problems with wrist heart rate, but with the 945 i had problems the first day. Basically after some time optical heart rate seems to shut down (no more green flashing) and then again it starts to work (sometimes when i try to look under the watch while wearing it). First training i had 50 min run with 3 "black outs" . I did send it to warranty and they did send me a new watch, but the problems are the same. Sometimes for example it works fine for ~3 hours and then it goes ~5min black. Faulty batch or i make something wrong?

  • The Garmin sensors (on all of their OHR range watches) have a detection for not being worn, e.g. if you put it on a table, this will shut down the OHR sensor to save energy. For some reason this detection seems to trigger on your watch.

Try to wear it for test purposes on your other wrist to see if this makes any difference, you may also want to try to wear it upside down, like on the back of your wrist to test if this does make any change.

If so, then there is some issue going on with your specific skin characteristics which disturbs the sensor's skin-contact detection. However in that case only Garmin support could advise you, what to do...

  • Do your tattoos extend to write underneath the optical sensor? Garmin, along with most (if not all) optical sensors claim they don't work with tattoos. If your other wrist doesn't, try it there. I'm assuming you're experiencing this on/off HR behavior, as when you're training, the watch may move, and land on a batch where the signal can barely get through, etc.

I had exactly the same problem! I had to downgrade to forerunner 935..

  • So you also have tattoos that extend under your watch?
