Swim autolap or how to avoid to forget starting the next interval

Would it be possible to implement a swim autolap function similar to running (e.g. Every 100 yards) or to Strength training (e.g. It automatically detects if you forget to start an interval and starts/stops it for you)?

It's really annoying when I forget to start the next interval because the activity doesn't count the distance while resting and there is no mode edit afterwards.

How do other people work this around? I'm sure I'm not the only one who forgets to start/stop the interval.

  • Up, yesterday I forgot again and I lost like 1000 yards of swimming. Any work-around solutions?

  • When I forget, I just kick myself and remind myself to remember next time. But think for a moment, how would the Garmin know whether you are resting or doing a drill?

Sorry but the simple solution is to remember to press the button.

  • My rest intervals are all timed. If you have a built workout with rest times already set, you only need to hit the lap button at the end of an interval. It will then count you in and auto start the next set at the end of your rest interval.

  • you still can add manual distance using drill log. better than nothing

  • Well, what I do sometimes (but I don't like because I can't see interval pace) is doing all my swimming in an interval without triggering any lap. It's accurate (more than when I forget to press the button), even with drills, since it uses the push in the wall to find out lengths. Some solutions I imagine are:

    1. A mode that detects continuous swimming and the moments I stop in the wall, and then splits these into intervals. For example:
    500 continuous swimming
stop in the wall -> 500 interval pace
    100 drill
stop in the wall -> 100 interval pace

    2. A  mode that detects you are swimming in a rest inteval (this should be easy to implement), so that it vibrates and asks you to confirm that a new lap has been started. It could then also add the time since it detected movement (the initial push).

  • I take a swimming class where the workout varies and I can't know in advance. Therefore I can't build a workout with rest times.

  • I didn't think about this option. I guess it can be used as a "calibrate option" for the treadmill. Thanks!

I was thinking the same. In running activities there is a setting called “Auto Pause” that you can set to “When Stopped”. Ot should work exactly the same with swimming. When you stop moving, it is a rest period. When you start moving again, a new interval should begin. My 2 cents.

  • Take a look at the Garmin Swim 2 that has just been released; it has an auto rest function exactly as you want. Better still DCR is told by Garmin that the Swim 2 features will make it in to the 945/MARQ/Fenix6 via software update in due course Smile

  • I saw it! Awersome, I can't wait for the update :)
