Strava smoothing my elevation

Hey guys and girls, I'm having problems with strava altering my elevation gain of trail runs. Garmin connect puts my elevation at 903m and then after it synced with strava it got 'smoothed' to 670m... I have a 945, how can I work around this issue? Also strava says I have a forerunner 10?! Has this happened to any of you?

  • Strava does post-processing of elevation data for every watch except for those that have a barometer.

So the root-cause for your problem is most likely that Strava detects your watch as a "Forerunner 10". For me it's always Garmin 945. So it's really strange why you see this behavior. Maybe it's best to ask Strava why they detect a wrong watch in your case.

  • From expierence i would expect that the Strava corrected value is higher then the barometric one.

Strava takes the map position height differences. The reported issue looks like watch recordered the GPS Altitude change which is the most inaccurate value.

  • Yes, that's also my experience. It get's even worse when you cross a river. It can get ridiculous if you run at a beach.

Anyway, the watch shouldn't be detected as a Forerunner 10. I'd start here.

I did contact strava, but they didn't get back to me... their customer service is pretty bad :(

  • Any ideas why the watch would do this if it is equipped with a barometric altimeter? But, I know the route being discussed here and there is no way that Strava's number is correct, definitely low. However, as the OP mentioned, Strava have exactly the worst paid customer service in recent memory.
