920xt Elevation Issues

Apologies for putting this in the FR 945 forum.  There doesn't seem to be a place for 920xt posts anymore...

In any event, my 920xt has learned a new trick over the last few weeks.  When I navigate to an Activity Profile, the elevation shows correctly (~500 feet), but as soon as I hit Start, the elevation rapidly rises to ~65000 feet in about 6 seconds, and stays there.

When I end the activity, and try to start a new one, the elevation is back at expected level.

I've used compressed air to attempt to clear the barometric altimeter port.

I've reset the watch to defaults.

Any other ideas?  Link to video below.

  • Hi, I just came across a same issue after installing 10.10 firmware. Have you find any solution?

  • I got into the same problem, but just realized recently.

this  started for me january 2022 when the 920xt started to have some errors like the light not turning on or the battery indicator going empty just after being full and a few minutes of activity. Then it started to respond slow, until one day that it totally froze. After trying several fixes like resetting to defaults, reinstall firmware manually from web page, trying a beta firmware and some other things, nothing worked, always looking for a solutions for frozen or slow system.

Until today, I just realized that an activity had the elevation totally flat but at a very hight altitude (6200 meters and I was like 2200). This seemed weird and I start to search for solutions regarding this issue and I found that the barometric altimeter can have erratic behavior after getting dirt or extreme pressure, so I looked at the history of activities and every recent one had a flat altitude.

Long story short I want back up to 2019 (I don't check the elevation stats frequently, i know) when I found the latest correct elevation record. Then started to have erratic values with flat graphs but initial and final values very extreme (like starting as 600m and ending at 10,000meters) this slowly become worse and worse until the day where the problem went beyond the altimeter.

    Now the solution:

Open the watch removing the four torx 5 screws at the back

Unplug the two terminals at the bottom of the main board

Remove the mail board by unscrewing two more T5s

At the bottom there is an small board (behind the back and enter buttons) unscrew two more T5s. This borscht has the back and enter buttons and in the middle the barometer.

The barometer is covered in a gelly material that may be dirty or wet. Dry it with a small peace of cloth and clean it. Then with a toothpick carefully put the gelly a little aside, the do the same thing on the other side, this is without removing the gelly from the small cylinder it is contained, just to make sure some air you open every bit of the surface and then putting it back to cover the complete surface and sticking it to the rim in every place.

Reassemble the whole thing, taking care that the rubber seal that covers the outsidebof the cylinder around the barometer dos not get deformed when entering the hole it fits in.

This should make the altimeter to work again and in my case solved the freezing problem.
