Display track on map without navigating?

Hello all,

do you know if it's possible to permanently display a track on the map during an activity (just as when previewing it) without actually navigating? In most cases this would be sufficient for me, especially since I've experienced very long calculation times recently when trying to start longer tracks.

Thank you very much in advance!

  • I assume you still want to see the map, but otherwise as a workaround you can deselect the maps being displayed for the current activity. Then it will just show the track itself, as it can't do any calculations (also used this workaround once when I just wanted to see an arrow 'pointing to a location' instead of actually having to calculate a route.

  • Thank you very much. I also noticed that it leaves out the calculation when disabling the map display, but as you said still seeing the map would be good.

  • I know exactly what you mean ;) Yeah, would love to find the trick for this as well for the same reason... route calculation taking long and not necessary. Just give me a direction where I have to go, show me the map and I'll figure it out myself.

  • I would love to be able to do that to!

  • This seems to work for me when going to a saved location, perhaps also an option for your use?

    1. Disable the map for the current activity... you'll get the blank screen

    2. Navigate to a point of of interest, this will go very quick and it will show a straight line

    3. Enable the map again... The route/navigations won't be re-calculated it seems and it will still show the straight line, but you;ll also see the map

Not perfect, but at least a workaround ;)

  • Coming back to this topic, emphasising how important that feature can be:

Last Saturday I participated in an Ultratrail consisting of several different loops around the village that contained start and finish line. I had a very detailed track of the race on the watch.

When trying to start the track around the start line, after a quick calculation it displayed the navigation - which just told me to go the finish. 30 m instead of 106 km, inacceptable! As I was partly unsure where to go, I sometimes started the navigation during the race. But even when it worked (which wasn't always the case), at the end of a loop it automatically quit the navigation because apparently I passed through the end of the track. Simply displaying the track on the map without navigating would've completely solved all these issues.

So please Garmin hear us/me out: For you it's definitely very easy to implement the requested feature (especially since I heard that it was available on other watches). Most of the time I don't need navigation but just the track on the map. Being forced to use the navigation is not only inefficient but also annoying, given that it can fail easily!

  • I was using track display on map on my Epix very often and it was a very nice feature. I run alone very often for longer distances. Sometimes i draw 2 or more tracks and show them in diffirent colour as alternatives to my  main track. Displaying track on map without navigating in FR945 would be cool!

Please send request for this feature via: www.garmin.com/en-US/forms/ideas/

  • If you have gpx of that track, just use route setting to DIRECT. There will be no calculating, but you will got only distace to end. I am using custom map without routing on my trail run profile and it works ok.

I have that setting of routing only on trail run profile. On run i have with map with routing in case i need one ;)

  • Thank you very much for that answer, that really sounds like an acceptable solution to me! If only I'd have known that before Saturday, that would have helped a lot. I'm looking forward to trying it out soon!

Nevertheless I also sent the feature request to the link you sent.

  • I hope it will work for you. I tested it only once for now. You can even disable anoying "on/off course" alert. So it will be very similar to only displaying track, but with calculation of remaining distance
