Loading time + Battery + iMac

I have bought the FR945 in Portugal and I have been having the following issues, so I am reaching out to this forum to get some help:

-1st "issue": It takes at least 15 minutes after turning the watch off to have it available again. It says it is loading fit files and maps, and only 15-20 minutes later I am able to start an activity. This has never happened to me before with all my previous Forerunners.

-2nd "issue": I am having some problems with the battery. Sometimes it drains very fast and sometimes it drains, but the % does not change (it is as if it is freezed). I have performed a hard reset and it helped, but after a couple of days, it happened again (the freezing).

-3rd "issue": When I connect the watch to my iMac, it is not recognized as a mass storage device, and I can not access the folders.

Is this "behaviour" normal?

Thank you very much in advance. I would love to have your views on these issues.

Best regards,

João Antunes

  • No. Based on 1st and 2nd, I would say do hard reset, even it's painful then get the own settings right.

3rd is what Garmin would say not a bug, it's a feature. All the music watches uses new protocol. I think people have recommended using https://www.android.com/filetransfer/ as Apple doesn't directly support the MTP.

  • That;s not normal behavior...

    1. Could occur after a map update, remember this the first time I got my watch but not since (have you connected it go garmin express, if that's available for the amc, to let it update? Do you have the newest, 2.50, firmware?

    2. Again, not normal... There have been reports of crazy drain, but a hard reset (I think) should fix this. Otherwise contact garmin, see this thread for details:

    3. This is normal for mac users apparently, see jmto's answer for a fix/workaround...

  • Thank you very much. I am using firmware 2.5 and I have Garmin Express installed in my iMac to manage the my Garmin devices. I have done the map update in the very beginning. It took a long time to load at that time, but I thought it would be a one off event. However, it never got better. Now, when I turn off the FR945, I have to wait 15 minutes before starting the activity, which is very annoying.

  • Same issue here as #1 - If I plug the device into my computer (Macbook) or if I power cycle the device manually (Power Off from the carousel, then power on again), it sits on a Garmin loading screen which displays "Loading .FIT files" for 8-10 minutes. If I charge the device on a wall charger, it's ok after taking it off the charger.

Issue #3 I believe is "expected" but also frustrating to me. On an Edge bike computer, I have to routinely clear out files stuck in the "NewFiles" folder on the device, otherwise it becomes unresponsive at times, taking minutes to recover. I wanted to check the 945 for the same issue, but could not.

  • As noted above get hold of Android File Transfer (it's free) and use that. There will be an update apparently for MacOS Catalina when it's released soon.
