Syncing Garmin and Strava run "descriptions" so you only edit one Description

When I complete a run on Garmin it uploads it to Garmin Connect and also automatically to Strava as I have the two synched.  However, the upload to both is just the generic description of that run, ie "Morning Run" on Strava and for that same run it would automatically put in the default "New York running" for my Garmin Connect.

If I want to edit the title in Garmin I can do so, but that title will not then auto update to Strava - I would have to open up Strava and revise the description manually.  Is there a way to sync these two so that I only have to enter the revised description in Garmin Connect and it then updates that same run in Strava?  Any suggestions would be appreciated, thanks!

The only work around i have found in to build a workout, name it how i want and run that workout. The sync to Strava will be the workout name.

  • Definetly this would be a really great feature, would much appreciate it. Also if it could sync with trainingpeaks as well :). Technically, it is a bit of a problem, since what garmin syncs to the other platforms is simply the *.fit file, and at the point of that sync, there is no "custom" name yet. At a later point in time when a name is set, there would have to be some new (standardized?) way to send the fact that the name of some fit file has been updated. It would basically require garmin, strava and whoever else to get together and work out a protocol they wish to support.

Obviously garmin could re-upload the fit file when the name changes, but thats a waste of bandwidth and who knows, maybe you already did something to your workout on strava that you do not want to override just because garmin activity name was changed.

Bottom line: This is a feature that sounds really easy to do, and that definetly would save tons of person hours of people editing names all over different platforms, but the technical problems behind it make it quite a tricky, cross-company type of project.

  • i think it's more a thing you have to request at Strava Support?

Training Peaks (Training Name) to Garmin works

TrainerRoad (Training Name) to Strava works

Stryd (Training Name) to Strava works

and of course, it depends on how you configured your syncs!

for example, don't sync Garmin to Strava, only sync Trainerroad or Stryd  to Strava, both begin sync to Strava when Data arrived from Garmin and so on, it's more ore less a logic of how you sync when you have 3rd party software involved.

i don't need the Garmin Name back in Training Peaks, because Training Peaks sent the Training with the correct name already to Garmin, they sent me only the data back.

in Garmin Connect Web you are able to configure how the Training have to be named:

in my case Trainingsname (if available)

that means, the thing with Training name works already with different third party software, could be, that Strava don't read the right name of the synced activity when they get it from Garmin directly?

  • It should be in Garmin's interest to fix this and add an option to trigger sync of activities after certain of time, or after Name and Description is set.

Currently all my activities have only generic names, because I really don't want to go back and forth just to edit every single activity on Strava and GC. Anyway, nobody uses GC as social platform => no reason to keep it nice and organized and it is just Garmin's fault due their ignorance.

  • It should be in Garmin's interest to fix this

Out of curiosity, why should it be in Garmin's interest to fix this - what is the added benefit from Garmin's perspective?

  • The benefit is to have properly named activities, not just the default names based on location. Now I am updating only activities in Strava and I don't care what junk is in GC.

To be honest, nobody from my friends cares about GC. Everybody just uses it for sync with Strava and then all details - activity name, description, photos and the most important part - the discussions. Everything is done on Strava. If Garmin will just ignore such small additions, then this portal will die completely like Movescout.

Garmin is "a tad" larger than Strava. If they decided to not sync data to Strava anymore, Strava would be out of business like this. Simple as that. Nothing is in Garmin's interest. I'd really appreciate it if Garmin would care more about GC. I couldn't care less about the social circlej*rk that is Strava.

I feel that it could easily be fixed (by Garmin) by setting a delay before sending the data to Strava. My information syncs perfectly fine between Strava and TrailForks (name, type of activity...) that has a delay of a few hours.

  • Interestingly, you can SEE the impact that Garmin has on Strava, knowing the dates of their services being down...it looks like Garmin is almost half of Stravas entire upload traffic.
