Open Water Swim - worked great (OWS)

I did an open water swim across a lake, 419m there and it recorded 418m return, my friend with a Fenix 5 who swam alongside me had zig zaggy tracking.

The 945 performed perfectly. This was using the beta GPS 2.42 with GPS and Glonass

  • are you sure it didn't only get a lock on start and end and drew a line between all available points?

Can you link the activity to satisfy my curiosity?

  • Lucky you, but it doesn't mean that OWS problem is fixed or working constantly.

Try repeating that let's say 1000 times to see what are the results then.

It worked great for me too when I tried it for the first time yesterday. It's a shame others appear disappointed it worked out for you.

A 1000 times?  That's what it will take for you to decide if it works OK or not?  So, if you were to do an OWS daily, you're going to wait nearly 3 years to compare the results?  Why are you setting the bar so low?  Lol

  • I did another OWS yesterday. This was my first one with the 2.42 GPS beta. I let the GPS soak for long enough it almost went into power save while getting my wetsuit on. When I jumped in I immediately lost signal(totally expected) but it then took it a very long time to re-acquire the GPS signal when I took my arm out of the water. It did finally go green and then I started my swim. The track looks pretty good, but you can tell it was struggling to find a signal. I was set to GPS only and it was a very challenging area. Heavy tree cover in a fairly steep sided reservoir. This is a swim I will be repeating at least once a week, so next time I'll try GPS + Galileo and the following time GPS + Glonass just to see what I get. Overall it wasn't bad at all.

I too used GPS only, but had an unobstructed view of the skies.  Where's Marion County?  Temperature wise, it looks like the same type of weather I'm getting in Western Washington.

  • True it was my first OWS with this watch, I will try again this week and update

  • Swam there, stopped and waited for friend then we swam back

  • this is also my experience. When I stop in between a swim it gets a signal and draws a direct line. In my opinion a direct line in a gps swim track isn´t a good sign at all :)
